Income and Poverty in Cochise County, Arizona

Contrasted against to other counties (or parishes) throughout the US, Cochise County, Arizona can be recognized as having a relatively high rate of poverty among the people, accounting a rate of 17.7 percent of people living in a family with an income below the poverty level in 1999. Reported by the 2000 Census in Cochise County, Arizona, the largest educational attainment category for men is the Some College or Associates Degree category, with 35.4 percent receiving this level of education. The women in Cochise have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than men -- 22 percent (Men) versus 15.6 percent (Women). A high proportion of the female population in the area has reached the Some College or Associates Degree, with 36.6 percent of the female population achieving this education level.

From the year 2000, Cochise has increased in the total percent of the over 25 population having a Bachelors Degree or Higher. This population group has grown by 3.2 percent to a total of 22 in 2005. According to the American Community Survey, the proporation of the population in 2005 with a BA or Higher is less than the porportion of Arizona percent of 25.6 and less than the average US percent of 27.2.

From 2000 to 2005, the percent of the male population that can be considered highly educated has increased by 4.4 percent. By the year 2005, a total of 18.2 percent of the women in the population had received a Bachelors Degree or Higher.

Cochise County, Arizona can be considered to have a moderately-educated population, with 18.8 percent of the population (+25) having received at least a Bachelors Degree, as reported in the Decennial Census of 2000. Cochise was reported to have a lower percent of population with high education level than the State of Arizona's proportion of 23.6 percent and a lower percent than United States proportion of 24.4 percent.

Demographic Profile for Cochise County, Arizona

Estimated since the year 2000, a high amount of people have migrated to Cochise internationally. The migration from outside the US into Cochise makes up 1.1 percent of immigration into the State of Arizona. This percent of international migration is high when analyzed against immigration per population in 2005.

Cochise County, Arizona had a population that was estimated at 126,106 in 2005. The total population has increased sharply, from the population in the year 2000 of 118,033. This growth signifies an increase of 6.8 percent. In Cochise County, Retail Trade, Accommodation and food services, and the Health care and social assistance sectors are the largest industries, in terms of total number of jobs in 2005. The Retail Trade is the major employer in the county making up 20.2 percent of all jobs throughout the county, totaling 5,037 people employed. The Accommodation and food services and Health care and social assistance industries make up 14.5 and 14.3 percent of all employment.
