The total population has increased sharply, from the population in the year 2000 of 211,661. This growth denotes an increase of 14.2 percent. Merced ranks 11 of 26 MSAs by growth in total population in California and the metro area ranks 80 of 361 metro areas when analyzing total MSA population change across the nation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Merced metropolitan statistical area (MSA) has a population that is comprised of 36.6 percent White, 3.5 percent African American, 6.2 percent Asian, and 51.4 percent Hispanic. This area can be considered to have a very high level of diversity, with 61.1 percent of the population made up of minorities. This is greater than the State of California percent of 53.4.
