Income and Poverty in New Haven County, Connecticut

When compared to other counties (or parishes) across the United States, New Haven County, Connecticut may be understood as having a poverty rate amid the residents with a poverty rate of 9.5 percent of the population with family incomes below the 1999 poverty level. Higher Education in New Haven County, Connecticut

In New Haven County, Connecticut according the 2000 Decennial Census, 29.2 percent of the White Alone, 13.6 percent of Black or African American, 65.8 percent of the Asian alone and 10 percent of the Hispanic or Latino population, over the age 25, has achieved at least a Bachelors Degree.

New Haven County, Connecticut may to understood as having a highly-educated working age population, with 27.6 percent of the over 25 years old population having a Bachelors Degree or Higher, according to the 2000 Decennial Census. New Haven counted a lower percent of individuals with higher educations than the State of Connecticut's proportion of 31.4 percent and a higher percent than the US proportion of 24.4 percent.

The 2000 Decennial Census reported that in New Haven County, Connecticut, a high proportion of the male population in the area have reached the High School Diploma category, with 30.2 percent obtaining this level of education. The women in New Haven have attainment on average a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than men -- 29.2 percent (Men) versus 26.2 percent (Women). The most common level of education for women in the area is High School Diploma, with 31.4 percent of the areas female population attaining this level of education.

From 2000, New Haven has increased in the percent of the population that is over the age of 25 with a BA or Higher. This population cohort has grown by 4.4 percent to a total of 32 in 2005. The American Community Survey reports that the proporation of the 2005 population that is highly educated is less than the State of Connecticut percent of 35 and greater than the national percent of 27.2.

From 2000 to 2005, the percent of male population that is highly educated has increased by 3.6 percent. By 2005, 32.6 percent of area's male population, over the age 25, achieved a Bachelors Degree or Higher. At the same time, the percent of women, over the age 25, holding at least a Bachelors Degree has increased by a total of 5.4 percent. By 2005, a total of 31.6 percent of the total female population achieved this high level of education.

Demographic Profile for New Haven County, Connecticut

In terms of total land area, New Haven encompasses a total area of 606 total square miles. The area has a very high average area density of 1,398 persons per square mile. Similar counties in the US, in terms of density, include: -- more densely populated -- Sacramento, CA (1,412 per sq. mile ), Contra Costa, CA (1,414 per sq. mile ), Douglas, NE (1,471 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- Oakland, MI (1,392 per sq. mile ), Monmouth, NJ (1,348 per sq. mile ), Bristol city, VA (1,344 per sq. mile ).

Since the year 2000, a high amount of people migrated to New Haven from outside the country. The immigration into New Haven makes up 20.9 percent of the total international migration into the State of Connecticut. This percent of international migration is high when analyzed against immigration per population in 2005.

New Haven County, Connecticut has a population base that is comprised of 71.9 percent White, 11.5 percent African American, 3.1 percent Asian, and 12 percent Hispanic. The population mix can be considered to have a high level of diversity in terms of race and ethnicity, with 26.6 percent of minorities in the 2005 population base.
