Income and Poverty in New Castle County, Delaware

The poverty rate in New Castle County, Delaware has increased by 1.7 percent since the amounts published in 2000, moving from 8.4 percent to 10.1 percent.

Higher Education in New Castle County, Delaware

From the year 2000, New Castle has increased in the percent of the total population (+25) with a BA or Higher. The portion of this population has grown by 2.8 percent to a total of 32.2 in 2005. The American Community Survey reports that the proporation of the 2005 population that is highly educated is greater than the porportion in the State of Delaware percent of 27.6 and greater than the United States percent of 27.2.

According to the 2000 Decennial Census in New Castle County, Delaware, many men in the area have reached the Bachelors Degree or Higher category, with 32 percent receiving this level of education. The women in New Castle have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors Degree or Higher) than the male population-- 32 percent (Men) versus 27.2 percent (Women). A high proportion of the female population in the area has reached the High School Diploma, with 30.8 percent of the female population achieving this education level.

From the years 2000 to 2005, the proportion of the male population that could be considered highly educated has increased by 2.0 percent. In the year 2005, 34 percent of area's male population (+25) achieved a BA or Higher. During the same period, the percent of women (+25) that have earned a BA or higher has increased by a total of 3.6 percent. Demographic Profile for New Castle County, Delaware

New Castle County, Delaware has a population that is made of 66.3 percent White, 22 percent African American, 3.5 percent Asian, and 6.7 percent Hispanic. The area population base can be described as having a high amount of racial and ethnic diversity, with 32.2 percent of the population made up of minorities. This is greater than the State of Delaware percent of 28.8. Since 2000, New Castle has increased the level of diversity when 27.9 percent of the population was made up of minorities.

New Castle County, Delaware had a population of 523,008 in the year 2005. The population has increased, since its 2000 population of 501,865. This growth represents an increase of 4.2 percent.
