Income and Poverty in Collier County, Florida

The poverty rate in Collier County, Florida has declined by 0.7 percent from the rates reported in the Decennial Census, moving from 10.3 percent to 9.6 percent.

Higher Education in Collier County, Florida

Since the year 2000, Collier has increased in the total percent of the over 25 population having a Bachelors Degree or Higher. This population group has grown by 2.4 percent to a total of 30.4 in 2005. The American Community Survey reports that the proporation of the 2005 population that is highly educated is greater than the State of Florida percent of 25.2 and greater than the United States percent of 27.2.

According to the 2000 Decennial Census in Collier County, Florida, the most common level of education achieved in the area for the male population is the Bachelors Degree or Higher category, with 31.8 percent receiving this level of education. The women in Collier have on average achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors Degree or Higher) than the male population-- 31.8 percent (Men) versus 24.2 percent (Women). Many of the women in the area achieving a Some College or Associates Degree, with 30.2 percent of women in the area reaching this education level.

From the years 2000 to 2005, the proportion of the male population that could be considered highly educated has increased by 2.6 percent. By 2005, 34.6 percent of area's male population (+25) achieved a BA or Higher. During the same period, the percent of women (+25) that have earned a BA or higher has increased by a total of 2.2 percent. By the year 2005, a total of 26.4 percent of the total female population achieved this high level of education.

Collier County, Florida has a population that is made of 68.6 percent White, 5.5 percent African American, 0.8 percent Asian, and 24.4 percent Hispanic. The population mix can be considered to have a high level of racial and ethnic diversity, with 30.7 percent of the population made up of minorities. This is less than the State of Florida percent of 36.5. Since 2000, Collier has increased the level of diversity when 25.5 percent of the people were minorities.

The U.S. Census Bureau, in the year 2005, estimated a median age in Collier County, Florida to be 43.1 years old. The median age in Collier is greater than the median age in the State of Florida of 39.5. Since the year 2000, the area has seen a decline in the median age, when it was 44.1 years old.
