Income and Poverty in Maui County, Hawaii

The median household income has declined a small amount from the values (adjusted for inflation) in 2000. The median has decreased to $57,573, which represents a 0.6 percent decline. Maui County, Hawaii, when comparing total percent of decline, ranks 1 of 2 counties in percent of decline for household income in Hawaii. Maui + Kalawao was reported to have a lower percent of individuals with higher educations than the State of Hawaii's proportion of 26.2 percent and a lower percent than United States proportion of 24.4 percent.

The 2000 Decennial Census reported that in Maui County, Hawaii, many men in the area have reached the Some College or Associates Degree category, with 30.8 percent achieving this level. The female population in Maui + Kalawao have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than men; 22.6 percent (Men) versus 22.2 percent (Women). Demographic Profile for Maui + Kalawao County, Hawaii

Maui + Kalawao County, Hawaii has a population base that is comprised of 34.2 percent White, 0.5 percent African American, 29.3 percent Asian, and 8.7 percent Hispanic. The population mix can be considered to have a high level of diversity, with 38.5 percent minorities. This is less than the State of Hawaii percent of 50.6. Since 2000, Maui + Kalawao has decreased the percent of minority population when 38.7 percent of the people were minorities.

When measuring the total land area, Maui + Kalawao spans a total area of 1159 square miles. This area has a medium-low population density of 121 persons per square mile. Educational services is an attractive industry due to its high level of job growth since the year 2001 in Maui + Kalawao County, changing a total of 62.6 percent.
