Income and Poverty in Canyon County, Idaho

The American Indian and Alaska Native headed households in Canyon County reported a median household income of $30,420, this median was 27.5 percent less than the areas median level for all households. Black or African American householders reported a median household income that was 30.9 percent greater than the overall median reported in 2000, with a reported median of $54,948. It was reported in 2000 that the Asian headed households had median household incomes of $43,609. This median income level is 3.9 percent greater than the reported median household income for all households in the area. Hispanic headed households in Canyon County, Idaho , according to the 2000 census, had a median household income of $36,036, which is 14.2 percent less than the areas median income level for all households. In Canyon County, Idaho White householders had a median household income (in 2005 Dollars) of $42,965 according to the 2000 Dencennial Census, which was 2.3 percent greater than the median in the year 2000.

Higher Education in Canyon County, Idaho

In Canyon County, Idaho according the 2000 Decennial Census, 16.2 percent of the White Alone, 21 percent of Black or African American, 23.2 percent of the Asian alone and 4.4 percent of the Hispanic or Latino (+25) has achieved at least a Bachelors Degree.

Canyon County, Idaho can be considered to have a moderately-educated 2000 population, with 14.8 percent of the population over 25 years old having received at least a Bachelors Degree, according to the Decennial Census of 2000. Canyon has a lower percent of population with high education level than the State of Idaho's proportion of 21.6 percent and a lower percent than United States proportion of 24.4 percent.

Since the year 2000, Canyon has increased in the percent of the total population (+25) with a BA or Higher. The portion of this population has grown by 0.6 percent to a total of 15.4 in 2005. According to the American Community Survey, the proporation of the population in 2005 with a BA or Higher is less than the 2005 State of Idaho percent of 23.4 and less than the United States percent of 27.2.

Between 2000 and 2005, the percent of the male population that can be understood as highly educated has increased by 0.6 percent. By 2005, 16.6 percent of total male population (over 25), in this area, held at least a Bachelors Degree. At the same time, the percent of women (over 25) holding a BA or higher has increased by a total of 0.6 percent. By 2005, a total of 14.4 percent of the female population having received at least a Bachelors Degree.

Reported by the 2000 Census in Canyon County, Idaho, the largest educational attainment category for men is the Some College or Associates Degree category, with 30.4 percent receiving this level of education. The women in Canyon have on average achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than men; 16.2 percent (Men) versus 13.8 percent (Women). Many of the women in the area achieving a High School Diploma, with 32.2 percent of the women population in the area achieving this level of education.

Demographic Profile for Canyon County, Idaho

Canyon County, Idaho has a population that is made of 76.6 percent White, 0.4 percent African American, 0.7 percent Asian, and 20.3 percent Hispanic. The population mix can be considered to have a high level of diversity in terms of race and ethnicity, with 21.4 percent of the population being minorities. This is greater than the State of Idaho percent of 10.5. Since 2000, Canyon has increased in diversity when 19.8 percent of the population was made up of minorities.

Canyon County, Idaho had a total estimated population of 164,593 for the year 2005. The total population has increased very sharply, since its 2000 population of 133,092. This growth signifies an increase of 23.7 percent. Canyon ranks 2 of 44 counties in terms of population growth in Idaho and the county ranks 98 of 3,141 counties by growth in county population in the United States.

By measuring total land area, Canyon spans a total of 590 total square miles. The area has a medium-high average population density of 279 persons per square mile, in 2005. With a total of 29.2 percent of the 2005 population being made up of children and youth younger than 18, Canyon can be described as having a relatively high proportion of youths. The working age population group (18-64) has a medium-low representation within the population, making up 60.7 percent of the population falling in this age category. The retirement (65 and over) group makes up 10.1 percent of the population in the area. When compared to other counties throughout the United States, this represents a medium-low proportion of the area population base.

In Canyon County, the U.S. Census Bureau, Population Division accounted for a total of 60,524 housing units in the year 2005. This represents a growth in housing units, adding a sum of 10,043 residential units since 2001, or 19.9 percent.
