In Lake County, jobs in the spectator sports pay the highest wages

Income and Poverty in Lake County, Illinois

The poverty rate in Lake County, Illinois has increased by 1.4 percent since the amounts published in 2000, moving from 5.7 percent to 7.1 percent.

Higher Education in Lake County, Illinois

In 2000, the Census reported that in Lake County, Illinois, the most common level of education achieved in the area for the male population is the Bachelors Degree or Higher category, with 41.6 percent obtaining this level of education. The women in Lake on average have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than men; 41.6 percent (Men) versus 35.8 percent (Women). The most common level of education for women in the area is Bachelors Degree or Higher, with 35.8 percent of the women population in the area achieving this level of education.

Since 2000, Lake has increased in the percent of the population that is over the age of 25 with a BA or Higher. This population cohort has grown by 3.0 percent to a total of 41.6 in 2005, according to the American Community Survey. The 2005 proportion of highly educated population is greater than the State of Illinois percent of 29.2 and greater than the United States percent of 27.2.

By 2005, 43.8 percent of area's male population, over the age 25, achieved a Bachelors Degree or Higher. At the same time, the percent of women, over the age 25, holding at least a Bachelors Degree has increased by a total of 3.6 percent. By 2005, a total of 39.4 percent of the female population had achieved this level of education.

Demographic Profile for Lake County, Illinois

By measuring total land area, Lake spans a total of 448 total square miles. The area has a very high average area density of 1,570 persons per square mile, in 2005. Other US counties with similar densities include: -- more densely populated -- Montgomery, PA (1,606 per sq. mile ), Suffolk, NY (1,617 per sq. mile ), Mercer, NJ (1,621 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- San Mateo, CA (1,558 per sq. mile ), Providence, RI (1,548 per sq. mile ), Multnomah, OR (1,546 per sq. mile ).

Lake County, Illinois had an estimated population of 702,682 in 2005. The total population has increased sharply, from the population in the year 2000 of 648,800. This growth represents an increase of 8.3 percent. Lake ranks 3 of 102 counties when analyzing total population change in Illinois and the county ranks 50 of 3,141 counties when analyzing total county population change across the nation.

Since 2000, a very high amount of people migrated to Lake from another country. The international migration into Lake accounts for 6.4 percent of immigration into the State of Illinois. This amount of international migration is very high when comparing levels of immigration per population in 2005.

Lake County, Illinois has a population that is comprised of 68.6 percent White, 6.4 percent African American, 5.4 percent Asian, and 18.2 percent Hispanic. The area population base can be described as having a high amount of racial and ethnic diversity, with 30.0 percent of the population being minorities. This is less than the State of Illinois percent of 33.1. Since 2000, Lake has increased the percent of minority makeup when 25.3 percent of the population was made up of minorities.

In the year 2005, the population division of U.S. Census Bureau estimates the median age in Lake County, Illinois to be 34.5 years of age. The median age in Lake is less than the median age for the State of Illinois of 35.6. Since 2000, the area has experienced an increase in this median, when at that time it was 33.8 years old. With a total of 28.3 percent of the 2005 population being made up of children and youth younger than 18, Lake can be understood as having a relatively high proportion of youths. The working age population group (18-64) has a medium-high presence of the population, with 62.7 percent of the population falling in this age category. The retirement (65 and over) group makes up 9 percent of the population. When compared to other counties in the United States, this represents a relatively low proportion of the population.
