Income and Poverty in Macon County, Illinois

While household income level experienced a decline since 2000 in Macon County, Illinois, the Race/Ethnicity category that saw the sharpest decline in median income was the American Indian and Alaska Native Race/Ethnicity category. Higher Education in Macon County, Illinois

In Macon County, Illinois as reported in the 2000 Census, 18.2 percent of the White Alone, 5.2 percent of Black or African American, 55.6 percent of the Asian alone and 11 percent of the Hispanic or Latino population (over 25) has obtained a Bachelors Degree or Higher.

From 2000, Macon has increased in the percent of the total population (+25) with a BA or Higher. The portion of this population has grown by 3.8 percent to a total of 20.8 in 2005, according to the American Community Survey. The 2005 proportion of highly educated population is less than the 2005 State of Illinois percent of 29.2 and less than the average US percent of 27.2.

According to the 2000 Decennial Census in Macon County, Illinois, the largest educational attainment category for men is the High School Diploma category, with 37.2 percent receiving this level of education. The women in Macon have attainment on average a lower level of higher education (Bachelors Degree or Higher) than the male population-- 18.8 percent (Men) versus 15.2 percent (Women). A high proportion of the female population in the area has reached the High School Diploma, with 38.8 percent of the female population achieving this education level.

In 2005, the Census Bureau estimated the median age in Macon County, Illinois to be 39.3 years old. The median in Macon is greater than the median age in the State of Illinois of 35.6. From 2000, the area has seen an increase in this median, when at that time it was 38.0 years old. With 24 percent of the population in the year 2005 being made up of individuals less than 18 years old, Macon can be described as having a medium-high proportion of youths. The 18 to 64 years old population group has a medium-low presence of the population, with 60.3 percent of the population within the age group.
