Income and Poverty in St. Clair County, Illinois

The poverty rate in St. Clair County, Illinois has declined by 2.7 percent from the levels reported in the Decennial Census of 2000, moving from 14.5 percent to 11.8 percent.

Compared to other counties (and parishes) throughout the nation, St. Clair County accounted a medium-high median household income of $45,803 (Adjusted to 2005 Dollars). This is 19 percent lower than the median income in State of Illinois of $54,510 and the median is 7.3 percent lower than the median in the US, which is $49,133.

The American Indian and Alaska Native householders in St. Clair County reported an income level of $55,157, which was 20.4 percent greater than the median for all households. Black or African American householders reported a median household income that was 36.5 percent less than the all population median published in the 2000 Census, with a median of $29,094. Hispanic in St. Clair County, Illinois reported a median household income of $42,877, this median is 6.4 percent less than reported value of the areas total household median income for all households. In St. Clair County, Illinois White householders had a median household income (in 2005 Dollars) of $52,370 according to the Decennial Census of 2000, which was 14.3 percent greater than the median in 2000. Higher Education in St. Clair County, Illinois

In St. Clair County, Illinois as reported in the 2000 Census, 21.8 percent of the White Alone, 11.4 percent of Black or African American, 34 percent of the Asian alone and 17.2 percent of the Hispanic or Latino population (over 25) has obtained a Bachelors Degree or Higher.

St. Clair County, Illinois has a highly-educated 2000 population, with 19.2 percent of the population over 25 years old having received at least a Bachelors Degree, according to the Decennial Census of 2000. St. Clair has a lower percent of the population with at least a Bachelors than the State of Illinois's proportion of 26 percent and a lower percent than the average across the nation of 24.4 percent.

Between 2000 and 2005, the percent of the male population that can be understood as highly educated has increased by 3.8 percent. As reported in 2005, 24.8 percent of area's male population, over the age 25, achieved a Bachelors Degree or Higher. At the same time, the percent of women, over the age 25, holding at least a Bachelors Degree has increased by a total of 2.2 percent. By the year 2005, a total of 19.6 percent of the female population had achieved this level of education.

Since 2000, St. Clair has increased in the total percent of the over 25 population having a Bachelors Degree or Higher. This population group has grown by 2.8 percent to a total of 22 in 2005. The American Community Survey reports that the proporation of the 2005 population that is highly educated is less than the 2005 State of Illinois percent of 29.2 and less than the US percent of 27.2.

In 2000, the Census reported that in St. Clair County, Illinois, a high proportion of the male population in the area have reached the Some College or Associates Degree category, with 32.4 percent reaching this education level. The female population in St. Clair have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than the men in the area: 21.4 percent (Men) versus 17.4 percent (Women). A high proportion of the female population in the area has reached the Some College or Associates Degree, with 32.6 percent of women in the area reaching this education level.

In St. Clair County, the census reported 111,496 housing units in the year 2005. This represents a growth in housing units, adding in all 5,836 housing units since the year 2001, or 5.5 percent.

Wholesale trade is the industry with the largest change in employment since the year 2001 in St. Clair County, growing by 19.1 percent. This is greater than the rate of industry employment change in the United States of 0.4 percent.
