Total industry employment has decreased by 1.2 percent since the 2nd Quarter figures of 2005. This change is greater than percent in Michigan, which went through a loss of -1.1 percent from 2005 (2nd Quarter). Income and Poverty in Berrien County, Michigan

It was reported in 2000 that the Asian headed households had median household incomes of $61,258. This household income level is 35.8 percent greater than the reported median household income for all households in the area. Hispanic in Berrien County, Michigan , according to the 2000 census, had a median household income of $39,574, which is 12.3 percent less than the median reported for all households in the area. The American Indian and Alaska Native headed households in Berrien County reported a median household income of $38,872, which was 13.9 percent less than the median for all households. In Berrien County, Michigan White headed households reported household income (in 2005 Dollars) of $48,402 according to the Decennial Census of 2000, which was 7.3 percent greater than the median in the year 2000. Black or African American householders reported household income levels that were 42.3 percent less than the overall median reported in 2000, with a reported median of $26,055.

When analyzed against other counties (and parishes) in the US, Berrien County had a medium-high median income for households of $45,123 (2005 Dollars). The income level is 15.8 percent lower than the household income median in State of Michigan of $52,260 and this is 8.9 percent lower than the median household income in the United States of $49,133.

Higher Education in Berrien County, Michigan

In Berrien County, Michigan as reported in the 2000 Census, 20.6 percent of the White Alone, 11 percent of Black or African American, 61.6 percent of the Asian alone and 18.2 percent of the Hispanic or Latino (+25) population has achieved at least a Bachelors Degree.

Berrien County, Michigan may to understood as having a highly-educated working age population, with 19.6 percent of the population (+25) having received a BA or higher, as reported the 2000 Decennial Census. Berrien was reported to have a lower percent of highly educated individuals than the State of Michigan's proportion of 21.8 percent and a lower percent than United States proportion of 24.4 percent.

Since 2000, Berrien has increased in the total percent of the over 25 population having a Bachelors Degree or Higher. This population group has grown by 3.8 percent to a total of 23.4 percent in 2005. The American Community Survey reports that the proportion of the 2005 population that is highly educated is less than the State of Michigan percent of 24.6 and less than the average US percent of 27.2.

In 2000, the Census reported that in Berrien County, Michigan, the largest educational attainment category for men is the High School Diploma category, with 30.4 percent achieving this level. The female population in Berrien have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than men -- 21.8 percent (Men) versus 17.8 percent (Women). A high proportion of the female population in the area has reached the High School Diploma category, with 33.2 percent of the female population achieving this education level.

From 2000 to 2005, the percent of male population that is highly educated has increased by 4.6 percent. As reported in 2005, 26.6 percent of total male population (over 25), in this area, held at least a Bachelors Degree. At the same time, the percent of women (over 25) holding a BA or higher has increased by a total of 2.6 percent. By 2005, a total of 20.4 percent of the female population had achieved this level of education.

Demographic Profile for Berrien County, Michigan

Berrien County, Michigan has a population base that is comprised of 78 percent White, 15.1 percent African American, 1.4 percent Asian, and 3.7 percent Hispanic. This area can be considered to have a high amount of racial and ethnic diversity, with 20.2 percent of the population made up of minorities. This is equal to the State of Michigan percent of 20.2. Since 2000, Berrien has stayed the same the level of diversity when 20.2 percent of the people were minorities.

In 2005, the Census Bureau estimated the median age in Berrien County, Michigan to be 38.9 years old. The median in Berrien is greater than the median age for the State of Michigan of 36.9. From 2000, the area has seen an increase in the median age, at that time the median was 37.5 years old. With 25.1 percent of the 2005 population being made up of children and youth younger than 18, Berrien can be understood as being made up of a medium-high proportion of youths. The working age population group (18-64) has a medium-low presence of the 2005 population base, with 60.1 percent of the population falling in this age category. Housing Report for Berrien County, Michigan

The owner-occupied dwellings in Berrien County, Michigan have seen large increases from the housing values in 2000. The residential values have increased by $32,700, or 34.5 percent, from when in 2000 they were valued at $94,700.
