Goodhue County, Minnesota had an estimated population of 45,585 in the year 2005. The population has increased, from the population in the year 2000 of 44,163. This growth signifies an increase of 3.2 percent. Goodhue ranks 29 of 87 counties when analyzing total population change in Minnesota and the county ranks 966 of 3,141 counties when analyzing total county population change across the nation.

Goodhue County, Minnesota has a population base that is comprised of 95.3 percent White, 0.8 percent African American, 0.7 percent Asian, and 1.6 percent Hispanic. The area can be described as having a very modest level of racial and ethnic diversity, with 3.1 percent of the population made up of minorities. This is less than the State of Minnesota percent of 11.2. Since 2000, Goodhue has increased the percent of minority population when 2.3 percent of the total population were minorities.

From 2000, a low number of individuals have migrated to Goodhue internationally. The migration from outside the US into Goodhue accounts for 0.2 percent of the total migration into the State of Minnesota. This level of international migration can be considered low when compared to international migration per 2005 population.

The median age in Goodhue is greater than the median age in the State of Minnesota of 36.7. Since 2000, the area has experienced an increase in the median age, at that time the median was 38.3 years of age. With a total of 22.9 percent of the 2005 population being made up of children and youth younger than 18, Goodhue can be understood as having a medium-low proportion of youths. The working age population group (18-64) has a medium-low representation within the population, making up 62 percent of the population falling in this age category. The retirement (65 and over) group makes up 15.1 percent of the total population in the area. Compared to other counties in the US, this represents a medium-high percent of the population base.

When calculating the total land area, Goodhue extends a total area of 758 square miles. This area has a medium-low population density of 60 persons per square mile, in 2005.
