The Misc. nondurable goods merchant wholesalers industry has lost the biggest percent of jobs, losing 47.2 percent from 2001 (2nd Quarter) to 2006 (2nd Quarter). These losses have declined faster than the industry sector has felt in the State of Minnesota, where the it saw a loss of 3.5 percent. The losses in the Misc. nondurable goods merchant wholesalers industry in Houston County outpaced the United States in terms of percentage decline of industry employment. In this period, the United States lost 1.8 percent in terms of employment in the Misc. nondurable goods merchant wholesalers industry.

Income and Poverty in Houston County, Minnesota

According to the 2000 Census, the Asian headed households in the area have median household incomes of $45,338. This median income level is 4.7 percent less than the all households reported median in the area. Hispanic headed households in Houston County, Minnesota , according to the 2000 census, had a median household income of $51,188, this income level is 7.5 percent greater than reported value of the areas total household median income for all households. The American Indian and Alaska Native householders in Houston County had a median income of $35,831, this level was 24.7 percent less than the areas median level for all households. In Houston County, Minnesota White headed households reported household income (in 2005 Dollars) of $47,707 as reported in 2000 by the census, which was 0.2 percent greater than the median household income in 2000. Black or African American householders reported household income levels that were 43.5 percent less than the all population median published in the 2000 Census, with a median of $26,874.

Houston County, Minnesota has a highly-educated 2000 population, with 20.4 percent of the population over 25 years old having received at least a Bachelors Degree, according to the Decennial Census of 2000. Houston counted a lower percent of highly educated individuals than the State of Minnesota's proportion of 27.4 percent and a lower percent than the average across the nation of 24.4 percent.

The 2000 Decennial Census reported that in Houston County, Minnesota, the largest educational attainment category for men is the High School Diploma category, with 35.8 percent receiving this level of education. The women in Houston have achieved a greater level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than men; 19.4 percent (Men) versus 21.6 percent (Women). A high proportion of the female population in the area has reached the High School Diploma category, with 33.8 percent of the areas female population attaining this level of education.

When compared to other counties throughout the United States, this represents a medium-high percent of the population.

Houston County, Minnesota had an estimated population of 19,941 for the year 2005. The total population has increased, since the 2000 total population of 19,753. This growth shows an increase of 1 percent. Houston ranks 40 of 87 counties in terms of population growth in Minnesota and the county ranks 1,667 of 3,141 counties by growth in county population in the United States.

Houston County, Minnesota has a population that is made up of 97.7 percent White, 0.5 percent African American, 0.4 percent Asian, and 0.7 percent Hispanic. This is less than the State of Minnesota percent of 11.2. Since 2000, Houston has increased the level of diversity when 1.4 percent of the total population were minorities.

Since 2000, a low amount of people migrated to Houston from outside the country. The immigration into Houston accounts for 0.1 percent of all immigration into Minnesota. This level of international migration can be considered low when comparing levels of immigration per population in 2005.
