Income and Poverty in Burke County, North Carolina

The households that were headed by an American Indian and Alaska Native individual in Burke County had a median household income level of $30,626, this level was 26.5 percent less than the median level for total households in the area. According to the 2000 Census, the Asian headed households in the area have median household incomes of $49,277. This income level is 18.2 percent greater than the all households reported median in the area. In Burke County, North Carolina according to the Decennial Census of 2000, 13.4 percent of the White Alone, 6.6 percent of Black or African American, 8 percent of the Asian alone and 3 percent of the Hispanic or Latino population, over the age 25, has achieved at least a Bachelors Degree.

Burke County, North Carolina may to understood as having a moderately-educated population of the working age, with 12.8 percent of the population over 25 years old having received at least a Bachelors Degree, according to the Decennial Census of 2000. Burke was reported to have a lower percent of individuals with higher educations than the State of North Carolina's proportion of 22.4 percent and a lower percent than United States proportion of 24.4 percent.

Since 2000, Burke has increased in the total percent of the over 25 population having a Bachelors Degree or Higher. This population group has grown by 3.8 percent to a total of 16.6 percent in 2005. At the same time, the percent of women (over 25) holding a BA or higher has increased by a total of 3.2 percent. By 2005, a total of 16.2 percent of the female population having received at least a Bachelors Degree.

The 2000 Decennial Census reported that in Burke County, North Carolina, the largest educational attainment category for men is the Less than High School category, with 34.6 percent achieving this level. Burke County, North Carolina had a total estimated population of 89,399 in the year 2005. The population has increased, since its 2000 population of 89,268. This growth denotes an increase of 0.1 percent. Burke ranks 82 of 100 counties by growth in total population in North Carolina and the county ranks 1,749 of 3,141 counties by growth in county population in the United States.
