Higher Education in the Grand Forks, ND-MN Metro Area

In the Grand Forks, ND-MN Metro Area according to the American Community Survey of 2005, 28.4 percent of the White Alone, . percent of Black or African American, . percent of the Asian alone and . percent of the Hispanic or Latino (+25) population has achieved at least a Bachelors Degree.

From 2000 to 2005, the percent of the male population that can be considered highly educated has increased by 4.8 percent. By the year 2005, 28.8 percent of area's male population, over the age 25, achieved a Bachelors Degree or Higher. At the same time, the percent of women, over the age 25, holding at least a Bachelors Degree has increased by a total of 3.0 percent. By the year 2005, a total of 27.8 percent of the total female population achieved this high level of education.

Reported by the 2005 American Community Survey in the Grand Forks, ND-MN Metro Area, the most common level of education achieved in the area for the male population is the Some College or Associates Degree category, with 32.6 percent obtaining this level of education. The women in the Grand Forks metro area on average have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than men; 28.8 percent (Men) versus 27.8 percent (Women). Many of the women in the area achieving a Some College or Associates Degree category, with 34.6 percent of women in the area reaching this education level.

Grand Forks, ND-MN Metro Area is made up of a highly-educated population of the working age, with 28.2 percent of the population (+25) having received a BA or higher, as reported in American Community Survey of 2005. The Grand Forks MSA was reported to have a higher percent of population with high education level than the State of North Dakota's proportion of 25.4 percent and a higher percent than the average across the nation of 27.2 percent.

Since the year 2000, the Grand Forks metro area has increased in the population percent with a Bachelors of Higher. Demographic Profile for Grand Forks, ND-MN

Estimated since the year 2000, a medium-high number of individuals have migrated into the Grand Forks metro area, with 917 people migrating in from outside the country. The immigration into Grand Forks totals 24.9 percent of immigration into the State of North Dakota. This amount of international migration is medium-high when comparing levels of immigration per population in 2005.

The U.S. Census Bureau, in the year 2005, estimated the median age in the Grand Forks metro area to be 34.3 years of age. The median age in Grand Forks is less than the median age for the State of North Dakota of 39.1. Since 2000, the area has experienced an increase in the median age, at that time the median was 31.9 years old. With 21 percent of the population in 2005 being comprised of children and youth younger than 18, Grand Forks can be understood as having a medium-low proportion of youths. The 18 to 64 years old population group has a relatively high representation within the estimated 2005 area population, making up 67 percent of the population within the age group. People 65 and older make up 12 percent of the total population base. Compared to other metro areas throughout the nation, this represents a medium-low percent of the population base.

The Grand Forks metro area had a total estimated population of 97,073 in 2005. The estimated population has decreased, from the population in the year 2000 of 97,245. The decline shows a decrease of -0.2 percent. Grand Forks ranks 3 of 3 MSAs in terms of population growth in North Dakota and the metro area ranks 314 of 361 metro areas by growth in MSA population in the United States.

In terms of total land area, the Grand Forks metro area covers a total land area of 3408 square miles. The MSA has a low population density of 28 persons per square mile. The Grand Forks metropolitan statistical area (MSA) has a population that is made of 91.4 percent White, 1 percent African American, 1 percent Asian, and 3.1 percent Hispanic. The area can be described as having a modest level of diversity, with 5.1 percent of the population made up of minorities. This is greater than the State of North Dakota percent of 3. Since 2000, Grand Forks has increased the level of diversity when 4.7 percent of the population was made up of minorities.
