Demographic Profile for Lancaster County, Nebraska

The U.S. Census Bureau, in the year 2005, estimated a median age in Lancaster County, Nebraska to be 32.6 years of age. The median age in Lancaster is less than the median age in Nebraska of 36.2. Since the year 2000, the area has seen an increase in this median, when at that time it was 31.9 years old. With a total of 22.6 percent of the 2005 population being made up of children and youth younger than 18, Lancaster can be described as having a medium-low proportion of youths. The working age population group (18-64) has a relatively high representation within the estimated 2005 area population, making up 66.9 percent of the population within the age category. People 65 years old and older make up 10.4 percent of the total population base. Compared to other counties throughout the nation, this represents a medium-low proportion of the population.

Lancaster County, Nebraska had a total estimated population of 264,814 in 2005. The estimated population has increased sharply, since the population in 2000 of 251,152. This growth represents an increase of 5.4 percent. Lancaster ranks 3 of 93 counties when analyzing total population change in Nebraska and the county ranks 257 of 3,141 counties when calculating the total change in county population across the US.

Lancaster County, Nebraska has a population that is comprised of 87.8 percent White, 2.8 percent African American, 3.1 percent Asian, and 4.2 percent Hispanic. The population mix can be considered to have a modest level of diversity in terms of race and ethnicity, with 10.1 percent of minorities in the 2005 population base. This is less than the State of Nebraska percent of 12.7. Since 2000, Lancaster has increased the percent of minority population when 9.1 percent of the population was made up of minorities.

When calculating the total land area, Lancaster encompasses a total area of 839 square miles. The land areas has a medium-high average population density of 316 persons per square mile, in 2005. Other US counties with similar densities include: -- more densely populated -- Portage, OH (316 per sq. mile ), Livingston, MI (319 per sq. mile ), Strafford, NH (323 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- Thurston, WA (315 per sq. mile ), Snohomish, WA (314 per sq. mile ), Newton, GA (314 per sq. mile ).

From 2000, a very high number of individual migrated to the Lancaster from outside the country. The immigration into Lancaster accounts for 23.9 percent of all immigration into Nebraska. This percent of international migration is very high when comparing levels of immigration per population in 2005.
