Income and Poverty in Lancaster County, Nebraska

The poverty rate in Lancaster County, Nebraska has increased by 1.8 percent from the levels reported in the Decennial Census of 2000, moving from 9.5 percent to 11.3 percent.

Lancaster County, Nebraska can be considered to have a very highly-educated population of the working age, with 32.6 percent of the population over 25 years old having received at least a Bachelors Degree, according to the Decennial Census of 2000. Lancaster is reported having a higher percent of highly educated individuals than the State of Nebraska's proportion of 23.8 percent and a higher percent than the US proportion of 24.4 percent.

Demographic Profile for Lancaster County, Nebraska

The U.S. Census Bureau, in the year 2005, estimated a median age in Lancaster County, Nebraska to be 32.6 years of age. The median age in Lancaster is less than the median age in Nebraska of 36.2. Since the year 2000, the area has seen an increase in this median, when at that time it was 31.9 years old. With a total of 22.6 percent of the 2005 population being made up of children and youth younger than 18, Lancaster can be described as having a medium-low proportion of youths. The working age population group (18-64) has a relatively high representation within the estimated 2005 area population, making up 66.9 percent of the population within the age category. People 65 years old and older make up 10.4 percent of the total population base. Compared to other counties throughout the nation, this represents a medium-low proportion of the population.

Lancaster County, Nebraska had a total estimated population of 264,814 in 2005. The estimated population has increased sharply, since the population in 2000 of 251,152. This growth represents an increase of 5.4 percent.
