Income and Poverty in Atlantic County, New Jersey

Black or African American householders reported household income levels that were 25.7 percent less than the overall median reported in 2000, with a reported median of $38,186. It was reported in 2000 that the Asian headed households had median household incomes of $61,695. This income level is 20 percent greater than the all households reported median in the area. Hispanic households in Atlantic County, New Jersey , as reported in 2000, had a median household income of $40,777, which is 20.7 percent less than reported value of the areas total household median income for all households. The households that were headed by an American Indian and Alaska Native individual in Atlantic County had a median income of $47,958, this median was 6.7 percent less than the areas median level for all households. In Atlantic County, New Jersey White householders had a median household income (in 2005 Dollars) of $55,181 according to the Decennial Census of 2000, which was 7.4 percent greater than the median income in 2000.

Higher Education in Atlantic County, New Jersey

Reported by the 2000 Census in Atlantic County, New Jersey, the most common level of education achieved in the area for the male population is the High School Diploma category, with 33.4 percent receiving this level of education. The women in Atlantic have on average achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than men -- 19.8 percent (Men) versus 17.8 percent (Women). Many of the women in the area have achieved the High School Diploma category, with 35.8 percent of the women population in the area achieving this level of education.

Since the year 2000, Atlantic has increased in the percent of the total population (+25) with a BA or Higher. The portion of this population has grown by 5.4 percent to a total of 24 percent in 2005, as reported by the American Community Survey. The proportion of the 2005 population having received at least a BA is less than the State of New Jersey percent of 34.2 and less than the United States percent of 27.2.

In Atlantic County, New Jersey according to the Decennial Census of 2000, 20.4 percent of the White Alone, 10.8 percent of Black or African American, 30.8 percent of the Asian alone and 7.2 percent of the Hispanic or Latino population, over the age 25, has achieved at least a Bachelors Degree.

Atlantic County, New Jersey may to understood as having a moderately-educated population of the working age, with 18.6 percent of the over 25 years old population having a Bachelors Degree or Higher, according to the 2000 Decennial Census. Atlantic counted a lower percent of individuals with higher educations than the State of New Jersey's proportion of 29.8 percent and a lower percent than the US proportion of 24.4 percent.

Between 2000 and 2005, the percent of the male population that can be understood as highly educated has increased by 4.0 percent. In the year 2005, 24 percent of total male population (over 25), in this area, held at least a Bachelors Degree. At the same time, the percent of women (over 25) holding a BA or higher has increased by a total of 6.0 percent. Demographic Profile for Atlantic County, New Jersey

When calculating the total land area, Atlantic extends a total area of 561 square miles. The land areas has a medium-high average area density of 483 persons per square mile. Other counties with similar densities in the US include: -- more densely populated -- Dauphin, PA (484 per sq. mile ), Floyd, IN (486 per sq. mile ), Rockwall, TX (489 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- Washtenaw, MI (482 per sq. mile ), Pulaski, AR (475 per sq. mile ), Marin, CA (475 per sq. mile ).

Atlantic County, New Jersey has a population base that is comprised of 62.4 percent White, 16.1 percent African American, 6.2 percent Asian, and 13.9 percent Hispanic. The population mix can be considered to have a high amount of racial and ethnic diversity, with 36.2 percent of the population made up of minorities. This is greater than the State of New Jersey percent of 35.6. Since 2000, Atlantic has increased the percent of minority makeup when 34.5 percent of the total population were minorities.

Since the year 2000, a very high amount of people have migrated to Atlantic internationally. The international migration into Atlantic accounts for 2.4 percent of the total international migration into the State of New Jersey. This percent of immigration can be considered very high when analyzed against immigration per population in 2005.

The U.S. Census Bureau, in the year 2005, estimated a median age in Atlantic County, New Jersey to be 37.6 years old. The median in Atlantic is less than the median in New Jersey of 38.0. Since the year 2000, the area has witnessed an increase in the median, when the median age was 37.0 years of age. With a total of 24.9 percent of the population in 2005 being comprised of children and youth younger than 18, Atlantic can be understood as being made up of a medium-high proportion of youths. The 18 to 64 years old population group has a medium-low representation within the estimated 2005 area population, making up 61.6 percent of the population within the age group. People 65 and older make up 13.5 percent of the total population base. Compared to other counties throughout the nation, this represents a medium-low proportion of the area population base.

Atlantic County, New Jersey had a population that was estimated at 271,015 for the year 2005. The total population has increased sharply, since the population in 2000 of 253,110. This growth shows an increase of 7.1 percent.
