Income and Poverty in Hudson County, New Jersey

Evaluated with other counties (or parishes) across the nation, Hudson County, New Jersey can be recognized as having a medium-high rate of poverty among its population, accounting a rate of 15.5 percent of the individuals existing in families with incomes under the poverty level in 1999. The Black or African American race/ethnicity demographic group, represents the largest rate of poverty with 25.2 percent of the 2000 population living in poverty. Hudson County, New Jersey has a highly-educated population, with 25.2 percent of the population over 25 years old having received at least a Bachelors Degree, according to the Decennial Census of 2000. Hudson was reported to have a lower percent of population with this high education level than the State of New Jersey's proportion of 29.8 percent and a higher percent than the national average of 24.4 percent.

The 2000 Decennial Census reported that in Hudson County, New Jersey, many men in the area have reached the Bachelors Degree or Higher category, with 27.4 percent achieving this level. The female population in Hudson on average have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than men -- 27.4 percent (Men) versus 23.4 percent (Women). Many of the women in the area have achieved the Less than High School category, with 30.6 percent of women in the area reaching this education level.

From 2000, Hudson has increased in the population percent with a Bachelors Degree or Higher. This population percent has grown by 6.2 percent to a total of 31.4 percent in 2005. By 2005, a total of 28.2 percent of the female population had achieved this level of education.
