Income and Poverty in Otero County, New Mexico

The American Indian and Alaska Native headed households in Otero County had a median household income level of $27,501, which was 23.8 percent less than the areas median level for all households. It was reported in 2000 that the Asian headed households had median household incomes of $36,696. This median income level is 1.6 percent greater than the reported median for all households in the area. Hispanic in Otero County, New Mexico reported a median household income of $27,818, this income level is 23 percent less than the median reported for all households in the area. Black or African American householders reported household income levels that were 6.8 percent greater than the total 2000 reported median, with a their median reported to be $38,550. In Otero County, New Mexico White householders had a median household income (in 2005 Dollars) of $37,477 as reported by the Decennial Census of 2000, which was 3.8 percent greater than the median household income in 2000.

Reported by the 2000 Census in Otero County, New Mexico, many men in the area have reached the Some College or Associates Degree category, with 38 percent obtaining this level of education. Demographic Profile for Otero County, New Mexico

Otero County, New Mexico has a population base that is comprised of 54.4 percent White, 3.7 percent African American, 1.3 percent Asian, and 33.7 percent Hispanic. The area can be described as having a high level of diversity in terms of race and ethnicity, with 38.7 percent of the population being minorities. This is less than the State of New Mexico percent of 46.4. Since 2000, Otero has increased the percent of minority makeup when 37.1 percent of the total population were minorities.

Otero County, New Mexico had a population that was estimated at 63,538 in 2005. The estimated population has increased, since the 2000 total population of 62,245. This growth represents an increase of 2.1 percent. Otero ranks 12 of 33 counties by growth in total population in New Mexico and the county ranks 995 of 3,141 counties in terms of population growth in the United States.
