Income and Poverty in Santa Fe County, New Mexico

The median household income has declined from the inflation-adjusted 2000 income levels. The income level has decreased to $45,304, posting a 8.3 percent decline. Higher Education in Santa Fe County, New Mexico

Santa Fe County, New Mexico can be considered to have a very highly-educated working age population, with 37 percent of the over 25 years old population having a Bachelors Degree or Higher, according to the 2000 Decennial Census. Santa Fe is reported having a higher percent of highly educated individuals than the State of New Mexico's proportion of 23.4 percent and a higher percent than the average across the nation of 24.4 percent.

In Santa Fe County, New Mexico as reported in the 2000 Census, 42.4 percent of the White Alone, 30.2 percent of Black or African American, 57.4 percent of the Asian alone and 14 percent of the Hispanic or Latino population, over the age 25, has achieved at least a Bachelors Degree.

The 2000 Decennial Census reported that in Santa Fe County, New Mexico, the largest educational attainment category for men is the Bachelors Degree or Higher category, with 38 percent receiving this level of education. The women in Santa Fe have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than men; 38 percent (Men) versus 36 percent (Women). Many of the women in the area have achieved the Bachelors Degree or Higher category, with 36 percent of the women population in the area achieving this level of education.

Since 2000, Santa Fe has increased in the percent of the population that is over the age of 25 with a BA or Higher. This population cohort has grown by 3.8 percent to a total of 40.8 percent in 2005, according to the American Community Survey. The 2005 proportion of highly educated population is greater than the State of New Mexico percent of 25.2 and greater than the US percent of 27.2.

Between 2000 and 2005, the percent of the male population that can be understood as highly educated has increased by 1.0 percent. In the year 2005, 39 percent of total male population (over 25), in this area, held at least a Bachelors Degree. At the same time, the percent of women (over 25) holding a BA or higher has increased by a total of 6.2 percent. By 2005, a total of 42.2 percent of the female population having received at least a Bachelors Degree.

Demographic Profile for Santa Fe County, New Mexico

Since 2000, a very high amount of people have migrated to Santa Fe from outside the country. The immigration into Santa Fe totals 13.9 percent of immigration into the State of New Mexico. This level of international migration can be considered very high when comparing levels of immigration per population in 2005.

Santa Fe County, New Mexico had a population that was estimated at 140,855 for the year 2005. The total population has increased sharply, since the 2000 total population of 129,813. This growth shows an increase of 8.5 percent. Santa Fe ranks 5 of 33 counties by growth in total population in New Mexico and the county ranks 301 of 3,141 counties when calculating the total change in county population across the US.

Santa Fe County, New Mexico has a population that is made up of 45.2 percent White, 0.8 percent African American, 1 percent Asian, and 49.4 percent Hispanic. The area can be described as having a very high level of diversity, with 51.2 percent of the population made up of minorities. This is greater than the State of New Mexico percent of 46.4. Since 2000, Santa Fe has increased in diversity when 50.7 percent of the people were minorities.
