In Washoe County, jobs in the securities and commodity contracts brokerage pay the highest wages

Income and Poverty in Washoe County, Nevada

Black or African American householders reported household income levels that were 24.3 percent less than the overall median reported in 2000, with a reported median of $40,597. Higher Education in Washoe County, Nevada

Washoe County, Nevada is made up of a highly-educated 2000 population, with 23.8 percent of the population over 25 years old having received at least a Bachelors Degree, according to the Decennial Census of 2000. Washoe counted a higher percent of the population with at least a Bachelors than the State of Nevada's proportion of 18.2 percent and a lower percent than the US proportion of 24.4 percent.

In Washoe County, Nevada according to the Decennial Census of 2000, 25.2 percent of the White Alone, 16.8 percent of Black or African American, 34.2 percent of the Asian alone and 6.8 percent of the Hispanic or Latino population, over the age 25, has achieved at least a Bachelors Degree.

Since 2000, Washoe has increased in the population percent with a Bachelors Degree or Higher. This population percent has grown by 3.2 percent to a total of 27 percent in 2005. The American Community Survey reports that the proportion of the 2005 population that is highly educated is greater than the State of Nevada percent of 20.6 and less than the US percent of 27.2.

According to the 2000 Decennial Census in Washoe County, Nevada, the largest educational attainment category for men is the Some College or Associates Degree category, with 34.2 percent reaching this education level. The female population in Washoe have on average achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than the men in the area: 25.2 percent (Men) versus 22.2 percent (Women). A high proportion of the female population in the area has reached the Some College or Associates Degree category, with 36 percent of women in the area reaching this education level.

Between 2000 and 2005, the percent of the male population that can be understood as highly educated has increased by 3.4 percent. As reported in 2005, 28.4 percent of total male population (over 25), in this area, held at least a Bachelors Degree. In terms of total land area, Washoe spans a total of 6342 total square miles. The area has a medium-low average area density of 61 persons per square mile, in 2005. Other US counties with similar densities include: -- more densely populated -- Johnson, MO (61 per sq. mile ), Le Sueur, MN (61 per sq. mile ), Union, GA (61 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- Russell, VA (61 per sq. mile ), Jackson, WV (61 per sq. mile ), Jersey, IL (61 per sq. mile ).

Washoe County, Nevada had a population that was estimated at 389,872 in the year 2005. The population has increased sharply, since the 2000 total population of 341,348.
