Employment Report for Queens County, New York -- Annual 2005 Industry Summary

In Queens County, Health care and social assistance, Transportation and Warehousing, and the Retail Trade industries are the largest employment industries. The Health care and social assistance provides the most jobs and contributes 21 percent of all the jobs in the county. This makes up 93,517 individuals. The Transportation and Warehousing and Retail Trade sectors account for 11.9 and 11.4 percent of total employment, respectively.

Finance and insurance has seen the highest growth in employment from the years 2001-2005 in Queens County, growing by 33.6 percent. This is greater than the national sector change of 4.8 percent. The State of New York experienced a change in employment in the sector of -5.1 percent, in the recent period of 2001-2005.

Manufacturing since the year 2001 lost the most jobs in Queens County. The industry lost a total of 11,221 employees during the period, or 26.1 percent of employment in the sector. These losses made up 43.1 percent of all employment losses in the county.

The Transportation and Warehousing sector in the county has a location quotient of 3.22. This means the percent of total employment in the Transportation and Warehousing sector is 3.22 times greater than the US average, showing signs that Queens specializes in Transportation and Warehousing.

Utilities is the industry with the largest establishments in Queens County, with the industry averaging 188 workers per each place of employment, being greater than the industry's average in the United States of 34 and greater than the New York average of 103 for the Utilities industry.
