Income and Poverty in Dutchess County, New York

While household income level experienced a decline from 2000 to 2005 in Dutchess County, New York, the Race/Ethnicity group that went through the most dramatic decline in median household income was the Hispanic category. This category saw a decline of 20.7 percent in the last five years. The Asian population group was least impacted by the household income decline in Dutchess County, experiencing a 7 percent increase in median income, since the values reported in the 2000 Decennial Census.

In Dutchess County, New York according to the Decennial Census of 2000, 28.6 percent of the White Alone, 12.2 percent of Black or African American, 62.6 percent of the Asian alone and 16.8 percent of the Hispanic or Latino population, over the age 25, has achieved a Bachelors Degree or Higher.

From 2000, Dutchess has increased in the total percent of the over 25 population having a Bachelors Degree or Higher. This population group has grown by 4.0 percent to a total of 31.6 percent in 2005, as reported by the American Community Survey. The proportion of the 2005 population having received at least a BA is greater than the State of New York percent of 31.2 and greater than the national percent of 27.2.

In 2000, the Census reported that in Dutchess County, New York, the largest educational attainment category for men is the Bachelors Degree or Higher category, with 28.4 percent achieving this level. The female population in Dutchess on average have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than the men in the area: 28.4 percent (Men) versus 26.8 percent (Women). The largest educational attainment category for women in this areas is Some College or Associates Degree category, with 30.4 percent of women in the area reaching this education level.

From 2000 to 2005, the percent of the male population that can be considered highly educated has increased by 4.6 percent. By the year 2005, 32.6 percent of area's male population, over the age 25, achieved a Bachelors Degree or Higher. The U.S. Census Bureau, in the year 2005, estimated a median age in Dutchess County, New York to be 37.7 years of age. The median age in Dutchess is greater than the median age in the State of New York of 37.5. Since 2000, the area has experienced an increase in the median age, when it was 36.8 years of age.
