Income and Poverty in Putnam County, New York

The median household income in the area has declined from the 2000 values (inflation adjusted). The median income has decreased to $81,076, which amounts to a 4.1 percent decline. The 2000 Decennial Census reported that in Putnam County, New York, many men in the area have reached the Bachelors Degree or Higher category, with 34.8 percent reaching this education level. The female population in Putnam have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than the men in the area: 34.8 percent (Men) versus 33 percent (Women). Putnam County, New York had an estimated population of 100,507 in 2005. The estimated population has increased, from the population in the year 2000 of 96,226. This growth signifies an increase of 4.4 percent. Putnam ranks 14 of 62 counties in terms of population growth in New York and the county ranks 547 of 3,141 counties by growth in county population in the United States.

In terms of total land area, Putnam spans a total of 231 square miles. This area has a medium-high population density of 435 persons per square mile, in 2005.
