Athens County, Ohio had a total estimated population of 62,062 for the year 2005. The total population has decreased, since the 2000 total population of 62,306. The decline represents a decrease of -0.4 percent. Athens ranks 65 of 88 counties when analyzing total population change in Ohio and the county ranks 2,409 of 3,141 counties when calculating the total change in county population across the US.

When calculating the total land area, Athens encompasses a total area of 507 square miles. This area has a medium-low average area density of 122 persons per square mile, in 2005. Other US counties with similar densities include: -- more densely populated -- Craighead, AR (122 per sq. mile ), Montgomery, KY (122 per sq. mile ), Rice, MN (122 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- Tipton, TN (122 per sq. mile ), Clinton, MI (121 per sq. mile ), Montgomery, NY (121 per sq. mile ).

Athens County, Ohio has a population that is made up of 92.9 percent White, 2.3 percent African American, 2.2 percent Asian, and 1.1 percent Hispanic. The area population base can be described as having a modest amount of racial and ethnic diversity, with 5.6 percent of minorities in the 2005 population base. This is less than the State of Ohio percent of 15.5. Since 2000, Athens has decreased in diversity when 5.8 percent of the population was made up of minorities.

Estimated since the year 2000, a high number of individual migrated to the Athens internationally. The migration from outside the US into Athens totals 1.4 percent of immigration into the State of Ohio. This amount of international migration is high when analyzed against immigration per population in 2005.

In 2005, the Census Bureau estimated the median age in Athens County, Ohio to be 25.8 years of age. The median age in Athens is less than the median age in Ohio of 37.6. Since the year 2000, the area has witnessed an increase in the median age, when it was 25.6 years of age. With 16.4 percent of the 2005 population being comprised of individuals under the age of 18, Athens can be understood as being made up of a relatively low percent of individuals under 18. The working age population group (18-64) has a relatively high representation within the estimated 2005 area population, making up 73.9 percent of the population makes up this age category. The retirement (65 and over) age group comprises 9.7 percent of the population in the area. When compared to other counties throughout the United States, this represents a relatively low percent of the population base.
