Demographic Profile for Lake County, Ohio

By measuring total land area, Lake encompasses a total area of 228 square miles. The county has a very high average population density of 1,019 persons per square mile, in 2005. Similar counties, in terms of density, in the US include: -- more densely populated -- Bucks, PA (1,023 per sq. mile ), Wyandotte, KS (1,029 per sq. mile ), Prince William, VA (1,032 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- Kent, RI (1,008 per sq. mile ), Tulsa, OK (1,003 per sq. mile ), Lake, IN (993 per sq. mile ).

Lake County, Ohio has a population that is comprised of 92.8 percent White, 2.5 percent African American, 1.1 percent Asian, and 2.5 percent Hispanic. The area population base can be described as having a modest level of diversity in terms of race and ethnicity, with 6.1 percent of the population made up of minorities. This is less than the State of Ohio percent of 15.5. Since 2000, Lake has increased in diversity when 4.6 percent of the population was made up of minorities.

Estimated since the year 2000, a medium-high number of individual migrated to the Lake internationally. The international migration into Lake makes up 3.1 percent of the total migration into the State of Ohio. This level of international migration can be considered medium-high when analyzed against the base population in the year 2005 and compared to other counties across the US.

In the year 2005, the population division of U.S. Census Bureau estimates the median age in Lake County, Ohio to be 40.6 years old. The median age in Lake is greater than the median age in the State of Ohio of 37.6. Since the year 2000, the area has seen an increase in this median, when at that time it was 38.6 years of age. With 22.5 percent of the 2005 population being made up of children and youth younger than 18, Lake can be understood as having a medium-low percent of people under 18. The 18 to 64 years old population group has a medium-high presence of the 2005 population base, with 63 percent of the population makes up this age category. The retirement (65 and over) age group comprises 14.6 percent of the population in the area. When compared to other counties throughout the United States, this represents a medium-low percent of the population base.

Lake County, Ohio had a population of 232,466 in 2005. The total population has increased, since the 2000 total population of 227,667. This growth represents an increase of 2.1 percent. Lake ranks 10 of 88 counties when analyzing total population change in Ohio and the county ranks 514 of 3,141 counties in terms of population growth in the United States.
