Higher Education in Lorain County, Ohio

Lorain County, Ohio may to understood as having a moderately-educated working age population, with 16.6 percent of the population (+25) having received at least a Bachelors Degree, as reported in the Decennial Census of 2000. Lorain has a lower percent of individuals with higher educations than the State of Ohio's proportion of 21 percent and a lower percent than the US proportion of 24.4 percent.

From 2000, Lorain has increased in the population percent with a Bachelors Degree or Higher. This population percent has grown by 3.0 percent to a total of 19.6 percent in 2005, as reported by the American Community Survey. The proportion of the 2005 population having received at least a BA is less than the State of Ohio percent of 23.4 and less than the US percent of 27.2.

The 2000 Decennial Census reported that in Lorain County, Ohio, the most common level of education achieved in the area for the male population is the High School Diploma category, with 36.8 percent obtaining this level of education. The women in Lorain on average have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than the men in the area: 17.4 percent (Men) versus 15.8 percent (Women). The most common level of education for women in the area is High School Diploma category, with 36.8 percent of the areas female population attaining this level of education.

From the years 2000 to 2005, the proportion of the male population that could be considered highly educated has increased by 4.2 percent. By 2005, 21.2 percent of total male population (over 25), in this area, held at least a Bachelors Degree. At the same time, the percent of women (over 25) holding a BA or higher has increased by a total of 2.4 percent. By 2005, a total of 18.2 percent of the total female population achieved this high level of education.

In Lorain County, Ohio as reported in the 2000 Census, 17.6 percent of the White Alone, 7.8 percent of Black or African American, 49.6 percent of the Asian alone and 6.2 percent of the Hispanic or Latino population, over the age 25, has achieved a Bachelors Degree or Higher.
