Higher Education in the Lima, OH Metro Area

In 2005, the American Community Survey reported that in the Lima, OH Metro Area, many men in the area have reached the High School Diploma category, with 42.8 percent obtaining this level of education. The women in the Lima metro area on average have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors Degree or Higher) than the male population-- 18.2 percent (Men) versus 15.6 percent (Women). Many of the women in the area achieving a High School Diploma category, with 42 percent of the women population in the area achieving this level of education.

In the Lima, OH Metro Area as reported in the American Community Survey of the year 2005, 17.6 percent of the White Alone, 10.6 percent of Black or African American, . percent of the Asian alone and . percent of the Hispanic or Latino (+25) population has achieved at least a Bachelors Degree.

From 2000, the Lima metro area has increased in the total percent of the over 25 population having a Bachelors Degree or Higher. This population group has grown by 3.4 percent to a total of 16.8 percent in 2005, as reported by the American Community Survey. The proportion of the 2005 population having received at least a BA is less than the 2005 State of Ohio percent of 23.4 and less than the average US percent of 27.2.

Between 2000 and 2005, the percent of the male population that can be understood as highly educated has increased by 4.2 percent. By the year 2005, 18.2 percent of area's male population, over the age 25, achieved a Bachelors Degree or Higher. At the same time, the percent of women, over the age 25, holding at least a Bachelors Degree has increased by a total of 2.8 percent. By the year 2005, a total of 15.6 percent of the female population having received at least a Bachelors Degree.

Lima, OH Metro Area is made up of a less-educated population of the working age, with 16.8 percent of the population (+25) having received at least a Bachelors Degree, as reported in the 2005 American Community Survey. The Lima MSA counted a lower percent of individuals with higher educations than the State of Ohio's proportion of 23.4 percent and a lower percent than the national average of 27.2 percent.

Demographic Profile for Lima, OH

The Lima metro area had a population of 106,234 in 2005. The total population has decreased, since the 2000 total population of 108,555. The decline denotes a decrease of -2.1 percent. Lima ranks 8 of 12 MSAs in terms of population growth in Ohio and the metro area ranks 338 of 361 metro areas when calculating the total change in MSA population across the US.

Since the year 2000, a low amount of people have migrated into the Lima metro area, with 176 people migrating in internationally. The migration from outside the US into Lima makes up 0.2 percent of immigration into the State of Ohio. This level of international migration can be considered low when compared to international migration per 2005 population.

In the year 2005, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates the median age in the Lima metro area to be 37.3 years old. The median age in Lima is less than the median age in Ohio of 37.6. Since the year 2000, the area has witnessed an increase in the median, when the median age was 36.4 years old. With a total of 123.4 percent of the population in the year 2005 being made up of individuals less than 18 years old, Lima can be described as having a medium-low proportion of youths. The 18 to 64 years old population group has a medium-low presence of the population, with 61.1 percent of the population makes up this age category. The retirement (65 and over) age group comprises 16.8 percent of the total population in the area. Compared to other metro areas in the US, this represents a medium-high percent of the population.

The Lima metropolitan statistical area (MSA) has a population that is comprised of 84.3 percent White, 11.6 percent African American, 0.8 percent Asian, and 1.6 percent Hispanic. The population mix can be considered to have a modest level of racial and ethnic diversity, with 14.0 percent of minorities in the 2005 population base. This is less than the State of Ohio percent of 15.5. Since 2000, Lima has decreased the percent of minority makeup when 14.2 percent of the population were minorities.

When measuring the total land area, the Lima metro area encompasses a total area of 404 square miles. The MSA has a medium-high population density of 263 persons per square mile, in 2005. Similar metro areas, in terms of density, in the US include: -- more densely populated -- Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale (265 per sq. mile ), Lansing-East Lansing (267 per sq. mile ), Huntsville (269 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Brent (262 per sq. mile ), Durham (258 per sq. mile ), Saginaw-Saginaw Township North (258 per sq. mile ).
