Higher Education in the Toledo, OH Metro Area

The American Community Survey reported that in the Toledo, OH Metro Area, a high proportion of the male population in the area have reached the High School Diploma category, with 36.4 percent obtaining this level of education. The women in the Toledo metro area on average have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors Degree or Higher) than the male population-- 23.6 percent (Men) versus 22 percent (Women). Many of the women in the area achieving a High School Diploma category, with 33.8 percent of the women population in the area achieving this level of education.

From 2000 to 2005, the percent of male population that is highly educated has increased by 0.6 percent. By the year 2005, 23.6 percent of total male population (over 25), in this area, held at least a Bachelors Degree. At the same time, the percent of women (over 25) holding a BA or higher has increased by a total of 1.8 percent. By 2005, a total of 22 percent of the total female population achieved this high level of education.

Toledo, OH Metro Area may to understood as having a moderately-educated population, with 22.8 percent of the population (+25) having received a BA or higher, as reported in American Community Survey of 2005. The Toledo MSA has a lower percent of the population with at least a Bachelors than the State of Ohio's proportion of 23.4 percent and a lower percent than the average across the nation of 27.2 percent.

Since 2000, the Toledo metro area has increased in the population percent with a Bachelors of Higher. In the Toledo, OH Metro Area according to the American Community Survey of 2005, 23.8 percent of the White Alone, 14.2 percent of Black or African American, 52 percent of the Asian alone and 9 percent of the Hispanic or Latino population, over the age 25, has achieved at least a Bachelors Degree.

Demographic Profile for Toledo, OH

Since 2000, a medium-high amount of people migrated into the Toledo metro area, with 3,616 people migrating in from outside the country. The immigration into Toledo makes up 4.8 percent of immigration into the State of Ohio. This percent of international migration is medium-high when compared to international migration per 2005 population.

The Toledo metropolitan statistical area (MSA) has a population that is made of 80.1 percent White, 12.3 percent African American, 1.2 percent Asian, and 4.8 percent Hispanic. The area population base can be described as having a high level of diversity, with 18.3 percent of the population made up of minorities. This is greater than the State of Ohio percent of 15.5. Since 2000, Toledo has increased the percent of minority population when 17.5 percent of the population were minorities.

In the year 2005, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates the median age in the Toledo metro area to be 36.2 years old. The median in Toledo is less than the median in Ohio of 37.6. Since 2000, the area has experienced an increase in the median, when the median age was 34.7 years old. With 20 percent of the 2005 population being comprised of individuals under the age of 18, Toledo can be described as having a medium-low percent of individuals under 18. The working age population group (18-64) has a medium-low representation within the population, making up 61.1 percent of the population makes up this age category. The retirement (65 and over) age group comprises 16.8 percent of the total population base. Compared to other metro areas throughout the nation, this represents a medium-high proportion of the population.

The Toledo metro area had a population that was estimated at 656,696 in 2005. The total population has decreased, since the population in 2000 of 659,209. The decline represents a decrease of -0.4 percent. Toledo ranks 9 of 12 MSAs in terms of population growth in Ohio and the metro area ranks 341 of 361 metro areas when analyzing total MSA population change across the nation.

In terms of total land area, the Toledo metro area spans a total of 1620 square miles. The MSA has a medium-high density of 405 persons per square mile, in 2005.
