Higher Education in the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA Metro Area

Since 2000, the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metro area has increased in the population percent with a Bachelors of Higher. This population percent has grown by 0.2 percent to a total of 17.4 percent in 2005. According to the American Community Survey, the proportion of the population in 2005 with a BA or Higher is less than the State of Ohio percent of 23.4 and less than the average US percent of 27.2.

Demographic Profile for Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA

From 2000, a low number of individuals have migrated into the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metro area, with 1,090 people migrating in from outside the country. The immigration into Youngstown-Warren-Boardman makes up 1.5 percent of all immigration into Ohio. This percent of international migration is low when analyzed against immigration per population in 2005.

The Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metropolitan statistical area (MSA) has a population that is comprised of 85.8 percent White, 10.7 percent African American, 0.5 percent Asian, and 1.9 percent Hispanic. The population mix can be considered to have a modest amount of racial and ethnic diversity, with 13.1 percent of the population being minorities. This is less than the State of Ohio percent of 15.5. Since 2000, Youngstown-Warren-Boardman has increased in diversity when 12.8 percent of the population were minorities.

The Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metro area had a population of 593,168 in 2005. The total population has decreased, since the 2000 total population of 602,254. The decline shows a decrease of -1.5 percent. Youngstown-Warren-Boardman ranks 11 of 12 MSAs in terms of population growth in Ohio and the metro area ranks 357 of 361 metro areas when calculating the total change in MSA population across the US.

By measuring total land area, the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metro area encompasses a total area of 1704 square miles. This area has a medium-high density of 348 persons per square mile, in 2005. The median age in Youngstown-Warren-Boardman is greater than the median age in Ohio of 37.6. Since the year 2000, the area has witnessed an increase in the median age, at that time the median was 39.6 years of age. With 22.1 percent of the population in 2005 being comprised of children and youth younger than 18, Youngstown-Warren-Boardman can be understood as being made up of a medium-low percent of individuals under 18. The working age population group (18-64) has a medium-low presence of the population, with 61.1 percent of the population falling in this age category. The retirement (65 and over) group makes up 16.8 percent of the population. When compared to other metro areas in the United States, this represents a medium-high proportion of the population.
