Higher Education in the Corvallis, OR Metro Area

From the years 2000 to 2005, the proportion of the male population that could be considered highly educated has decreased by 5.4 percent. As reported in 2005, 46.6 percent of area's male population, over the age 25, achieved a Bachelors Degree or Higher. At the same time, the percent of women, over the age 25, holding at least a Bachelors Degree has increased by a total of 1.2 percent. By the year 2005, a total of 44.4 percent of the female population had achieved this level of education.

The American Community Survey reported that in the Corvallis, OR Metro Area, the largest educational attainment category for men is the Bachelors Degree or Higher category, with 46.6 percent achieving this level. The female population in the Corvallis metro area have on average achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than men -- 46.6 percent (Men) versus 44.4 percent (Women). Many of the women in the area achieving a Bachelors Degree or Higher category, with 44.4 percent of the women population in the area achieving this level of education.

In the Corvallis, OR Metro Area as reported in the American Community Survey of the year 2005, 45.8 percent of the White Alone, . percent of Black or African American, . percent of the Asian alone and . percent of the Hispanic or Latino population, over the age 25, has achieved a Bachelors Degree or Higher.

From the year 2000, the Corvallis metro area has decreased in the population percent with a Bachelors of Higher. This population percent has declined by 2.0 percent to a total of 45.4 percent in 2005, as reported by the American Community Survey. The proportion of the 2005 population having received at least a BA is greater than the 2005 State of Oregon percent of 27.8 and greater than the average US percent of 27.2.

Corvallis, OR Metro Area is made up of a very highly-educated population of the working age, with 45.4 percent of the population (+25) having received a BA or higher, as reported in American Community Survey of 2005. The Corvallis MSA is reported having a higher percent of highly educated individuals than the State of Oregon's proportion of 27.8 percent and a higher percent than the national average of 27.2 percent.

Demographic Profile for Corvallis, OR

When measuring the total land area, the Corvallis metro area spans a total area of 676 square miles. The MSA has a medium-low density of 116 persons per square mile. Other metro areas with similar densities in the US include: -- more densely populated -- Decatur (116 per sq. mile ), Iowa City (117 per sq. mile ), Parkersburg-Marietta (119 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- Monroe (115 per sq. mile ), Terre Haute (115 per sq. mile ), Utica-Rome (114 per sq. mile ).

From 2000, a very high number of individuals migrated into the Corvallis metro area, with 1,973 people migrating in internationally. The migration from outside the US into Corvallis accounts for 2.7 percent of immigration into the State of Oregon. This percent of international migration is very high when analyzed against immigration per population in 2005.

The Corvallis metropolitan statistical area (MSA) has a population base that is comprised of 85.2 percent White, 1.1 percent African American, 5.1 percent Asian, and 5.5 percent Hispanic. The area population base can be described as having a modest level of racial and ethnic diversity, with 11.7 percent of minorities in the 2005 population base. This is less than the State of Oregon percent of 14.9. Since 2000, Corvallis has increased in diversity when 10.3 percent of the people were minorities.

The Corvallis metro area had a total estimated population of 78,640 for the year 2005. The total population has increased, since the population in 2000 of 78,121. This growth shows an increase of 0.7 percent. Corvallis ranks 6 of 6 MSAs when calculating total change in population for Oregon and the metro area ranks 305 of 361 metro areas by growth in MSA population in the United States.

The U.S. Census Bureau, in the year 2005, estimated the median age in the Corvallis metro area to be 35.3 years old. The median in Corvallis is less than the median age in Oregon of 37.0. Since 2000, the area has experienced an increase in the median age, at that time the median was 31.1 years of age. With a total of 122.9 percent of the 2005 population being made up of children and youth younger than 18, Corvallis can be understood as being made up of a medium-high proportion of youths. The 18 to 64 years old population group has a medium-low representation within the estimated 2005 area population, making up 61.8 percent of the population falling in this age category. The retirement (65 and over) group makes up 12.4 percent of the total population in the area. Compared to other metro areas in the US, this represents a medium-low proportion of the area population base.
