In Allegheny County, jobs in the natural gas distribution pay the highest wages

Income and Poverty in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania

The poverty rate in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania has increased by 1.2 percent since the amounts published in 2000, moving from 11.2 percent to 12.4 percent.

Higher Education in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania

In Allegheny County, Pennsylvania according to the Decennial Census of 2000, 29.4 percent of the White Alone, 13.4 percent of Black or African American, 73.4 percent of the Asian alone and 37.8 percent of the Hispanic or Latino population, over the age 25, has achieved a Bachelors Degree or Higher.

Allegheny County, Pennsylvania is made up of a highly-educated working age population, with 28.4 percent of the over 25 years old population having a Bachelors Degree or Higher, according to the 2000 Decennial Census. Allegheny has a higher percent of the population with at least a Bachelors than the State of Pennsylvania's proportion of 22.4 percent and a higher percent than the national average of 24.4 percent.

From 2000 to 2005, the percent of the male population that can be considered highly educated has increased by 4.4 percent. By 2005, 36.4 percent of total male population (over 25), in this area, held at least a Bachelors Degree. At the same time, the percent of women (over 25) holding a BA or higher has increased by a total of 4.6 percent. By the year 2005, a total of 29.8 percent of the female population had achieved this level of education.

Allegheny County, Pennsylvania had an estimated population of 1,235,841 in 2005. The total population has decreased, since its 2000 population of 1,279,817. The decline represents a decrease of -3.4 percent. Allegheny ranks 66 of 67 counties in terms of population growth in Pennsylvania and the county ranks 3,137 of 3,141 counties when analyzing total county population change across the nation.

In 2005, the Census Bureau estimated the median age in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania to be 41.5 years of age. The median age in Allegheny is greater than the median age in the State of Pennsylvania of 39.7. Since the year 2000, the area has seen an increase in this median, when at that time it was 39.7 years old. Manufacturing since the year 2001 lost the most jobs in Allegheny County. The industry was hit with a loss of 12,108 jobs during the period, or 21.9 percent of employment in the sector. These losses made up 27.2 percent of all county employment losses since 2001.

In Allegheny County, Health care and social assistance, Retail Trade, and the Accommodation and food services sectors, in terms of total employment, are the largest.
