Income and Poverty in Centre County, Pennsylvania

The poverty rate in Centre County, Pennsylvania has increased by 3.0 percent from the levels reported in the Decennial Census of 2000, moving from 18.8 percent to 21.8 percent.

As the median household income witnessed a decline from 2000 to 2005 in Centre County, Pennsylvania, the Race/Ethnicity category that saw the sharpest decline in median income was the White Race/Ethnicity category. This category went through a decline of 9.7 percent since the year 2000. In Centre County, Pennsylvania as reported in the Census of the year 2000, 34.6 percent of the White Alone, 20 percent of Black or African American, 84.8 percent of the Asian alone and 48.8 percent of the Hispanic or Latino population (over 25) has obtained a Bachelors Degree or Higher.

Centre County, Pennsylvania is made up of a very highly-educated working age population, with 36.2 percent of the population (+25) having received at least a Bachelors Degree, as reported in the Decennial Census of 2000. Centre counted a higher percent of individuals with higher educations than the State of Pennsylvania's proportion of 22.4 percent and a higher percent than the US proportion of 24.4 percent.

Since 2000, Centre has increased in the population percent with a Bachelors Degree or Higher. This population percent has grown by 4.0 percent to a total of 40.2 percent in 2005. Demographic Profile for Centre County, Pennsylvania

Centre County, Pennsylvania has a population that is comprised of 89.6 percent White, 2.8 percent African American, 4.6 percent Asian, and 1.9 percent Hispanic. The area population base can be described as having a modest level of diversity, with 9.3 percent of the population being minorities. This is less than the State of Pennsylvania percent of 16.4. Since 2000, Centre has increased the level of diversity when 8.6 percent of the population were minorities.

In terms of total land area, Centre encompasses a total area of 1108 square miles. The county has a medium-low average area density of 127 persons per square mile.
