Income and Poverty in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

The rate of poverty in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania has increased by 1.3 percent since the amounts published in 2000, moving from 7.8 percent to 9.1 percent.

While household income level experienced a decline in the last five year in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the Race/Ethnicity category that felt the biggest decline in household income was the Black or African American category. Higher Education in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania has a highly-educated working age population, with 20.6 percent of the over 25 years old population having a Bachelors Degree or Higher, according to the 2000 Decennial Census. Lancaster counted a lower percent of individuals with higher educations than the State of Pennsylvania's proportion of 22.4 percent and a lower percent than the average across the nation of 24.4 percent.

According to the 2000 Decennial Census in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the most common level of education achieved in the area for the male population is the High School Diploma category, with 37.2 percent receiving this level of education. The women in Lancaster on average have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than men; 21.8 percent (Men) versus 19.2 percent (Women). The largest educational attainment category for women in this areas is High School Diploma category, with 40.4 percent of the women population in the area achieving this level of education.

Since 2000, Lancaster has increased in the percent of the population that is over the age of 25 with a BA or Higher. This population cohort has grown by 2.4 percent to a total of 23 percent in 2005. Between 2000 and 2005, the percent of the male population that can be understood as highly educated has increased by 2.2 percent. By 2005, 24.2 percent of total male population (over 25), in this area, held at least a Bachelors Degree. At the same time, the percent of women (over 25) holding a BA or higher has increased by a total of 2.6 percent. By the year 2005, a total of 21.8 percent of the female population had achieved this level of education.

Demographic Profile for Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

Since 2000, a medium-high number of individuals have migrated to Lancaster from outside the country. The immigration into Lancaster makes up 2.8 percent of all immigration into Pennsylvania. This level of international migration can be considered medium-high when compared to international migration per 2005 population.

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania had an estimated population of 490,562 in 2005. The estimated population has increased, since the 2000 total population of 471,743. This growth signifies an increase of 4 percent. Lancaster ranks 8 of 67 counties in terms of population growth in Pennsylvania and the county ranks 189 of 3,141 counties when calculating the total change in county population across the US.

With 25.4 percent of the population in the year 2005 being made up of individuals less than 18 years old, Lancaster can be described as having a medium-high proportion of youths. The 18 to 64 years old population group has a medium-low representation within the estimated 2005 area population, making up 60.3 percent of the population within the age group. People 65 and older make up 14.2 percent of the population. When compared to other counties in the United States, this represents a medium-low proportion of the population.
