Income and Poverty in Bristol County, Rhode Island

When put side-by-side with other counties (or parishes) throughout the United States, Bristol County, Rhode Island can be recognized as having a rate of poverty among its population, accounting a rate of 6.3 percent of the individuals existing in families with incomes under the poverty level in 1999. The Black or African American race/ethnicity population category, holds the highest rate of poverty with 17.6 percent of the 2000 residents living in poverty. People aged 75 years and over are witness to the most percent living in poverty in Bristol County, with 12.3 percent of the population in this age category living in poverty.

Compared to other counties (and parishes) throughout the nation, Bristol County reported a relatively high household income of $59,362 (2005 Dollars). This median is 17 percent higher than the median in State of Rhode Island of $49,245 and the median household income is 17.2 percent higher than the median household income in the United States of $49,133.

Black or African American householders reported a median household income that was 5.6 percent less than the overall median reported in 2000, with a reported median of $56,025. Hispanic headed households in Bristol County, Rhode Island reported a median household income of $43,632, this income level is 26.5 percent less than the reported median household income for all households in the area. It was reported in 2000 that the Asian headed households had median household incomes of $104,658. This median is 76.3 percent greater than the reported median household income, in the area, for all households. In Bristol County, Rhode Island White headed households reported household income (in 2005 Dollars) of $59,806 as reported in 2000 by the census, which was 0.7 percent greater than the median in the year 2000.

Bristol County, Rhode Island has a very highly-educated population of the working age, with 34.2 percent of the population (+25) having received at least a Bachelors Degree, as reported in the Decennial Census of 2000. Bristol is reported having a higher percent of highly educated individuals than the State of Rhode Island's proportion of 25.6 percent and a higher percent than the average across the nation of 24.4 percent.

According to the 2000 Decennial Census in Bristol County, Rhode Island, a high proportion of the male population in the area have reached the Bachelors Degree or Higher category, with 37 percent reaching this education level. The female population in Bristol have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than the men in the area: 37 percent (Men) versus 32 percent (Women). A high proportion of the female population in the area has reached the Bachelors Degree or Higher category, with 32 percent of the women population in the area achieving this level of education.

Demographic Profile for Bristol County, Rhode Island

Bristol County, Rhode Island had a population of 52,743 in 2005. The total population has increased, since the population in 2000 of 50,736. This growth signifies an increase of 4 percent. Bristol ranks 4 of 5 counties when calculating total change in population for Rhode Island and the county ranks 827 of 3,141 counties when calculating the total change in county population across the US.

When calculating the total land area, Bristol encompasses a total area of 25 square miles. The land areas has a very high density of 2,137 persons per square mile, in 2005. Similar counties, in terms of density, in the US include: -- more densely populated -- Westchester, NY (2,174 per sq. mile ), Marion, IN (2,178 per sq. mile ), Camden, NJ (2,331 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- Harris, TX (2,136 per sq. mile ), Franklin, OH (2,020 per sq. mile ), Hennepin, MN (2,011 per sq. mile ).

Bristol County, Rhode Island has a population that is comprised of 95.1 percent White, 1 percent African American, 1.5 percent Asian, and 1.6 percent Hispanic. The area population base can be described as having a very modest amount of racial and ethnic diversity, with 4.1 percent of minorities in the 2005 population base. This is less than the State of Rhode Island percent of 18.3. Since 2000, Bristol has increased the percent of minority makeup when 3.0 percent of the total population were minorities.

In 2005, the Census Bureau estimated the median age in Bristol County, Rhode Island to be 40.3 years old. The median in Bristol is greater than the median age in the State of Rhode Island of 38.4. Since 2000, the area has experienced an increase in the median age, when it was 39.4 years of age. With a total of 20.4 percent of the population in 2005 being comprised of children and youth younger than 18, Bristol can be described as having a medium-low proportion of youths. The working age population group (18-64) has a medium-high representation within the population, making up 63.8 percent of the population within the age group. People 65 and older make up 15.8 percent of the population. When compared to other counties in the United States, this represents a medium-high proportion of the area population base.

Estimated since the year 2000, a medium-low number of individual migrated to the Bristol from outside the country. The immigration into Bristol accounts for 1.2 percent of immigration into the State of Rhode Island. This percent of immigration can be considered medium-low when comparing levels of immigration per population in 2005.
