The income level is 0.2 percent higher than the median for the rest of the nation, which is a reported $49,133.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Contrasted against to other States throughout the US, the State of Rhode Island can be understood to have a medium-high poverty rate amongst the population, with a poverty rate of 11.9 percent of people living in a family with an income below the poverty level in 1999. The &lt;I&gt;American Indian and Alaska Native&lt;/I&gt; race/ethnicity population category, holds the highest rate of poverty with 38.6 percent of the 2000 residents living in poverty. People aged &lt;I&gt;Under 5 years&lt;/I&gt; are witness to the most percent living in poverty in Rhode Island, reporting 19.3 percent of the population in this age category living in poverty.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The median household income in the area has &lt;I&gt;&lt;B&gt;increased&lt;/B&gt;&lt;/I&gt; from the values (adjusted for inflation) in 2000.
