Income and Poverty in Aiken County, South Carolina

While the median household income saw a decline since 2000 in Aiken County, South Carolina, the Race/Ethnicity group that experienced the largest decline in median income was the Hispanic category. This group felt a decline of 37.4 percent from 2000 to 2005. The American Indian and Alaska Native Race/Ethnicity category has been least effected by the income level decline in Aiken County, undergoing a 85.9 percent increase in household income level, since the year 2005.

Higher Education in Aiken County, South Carolina

In Aiken County, South Carolina according the 2000 Decennial Census, 23.2 percent of the White Alone, 9 percent of Black or African American, 40.6 percent of the Asian alone and 10 percent of the Hispanic or Latino population, over the age 25, has achieved at least a Bachelors Degree.

Aiken County, South Carolina may to understood as having a highly-educated population, with 20 percent of the population (+25) having received at least a Bachelors Degree, as reported in the Decennial Census of 2000. Aiken has a lower percent of highly educated individuals than the State of South Carolina's proportion of 20.4 percent and a lower percent than the US proportion of 24.4 percent.

In 2000, the Census reported that in Aiken County, South Carolina, a high proportion of the male population in the area have reached the High School Diploma category, with 31 percent achieving this level. The female population in Aiken have attainment on average a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than men -- 22.8 percent (Men) versus 17.6 percent (Women). Many of the women in the area have achieved the High School Diploma category, with 32.4 percent of the female population achieving this education level.

Since the year 2000, Aiken has increased in the percent of the population that is over the age of 25 with a BA or Higher. From 2000 to 2005, the percent of the male population that can be considered highly educated has decreased by 0.8 percent. As reported in 2005, 22.2 percent of total male population (over 25), in this area, held at least a Bachelors Degree. At the same time, the percent of women (over 25) holding a BA or higher has increased by a total of 7.4 percent. By 2005, a total of 25 percent of the total female population achieved this high level of education.

Demographic Profile for Aiken County, South Carolina

Since the year 2000, a medium-high number of individuals have migrated to Aiken internationally. The migration from outside the US into Aiken accounts for 2.6 percent of all immigration into South Carolina. This level of international migration can be considered medium-high when compared to international migration per 2005 population.

The U.S. Census Bureau, in the year 2005, estimated a median age in Aiken County, South Carolina to be 38.2 years of age. The median age in Aiken is greater than the median age for the State of South Carolina of 37.1. Since the year 2000, the area has seen an increase in this median, when at that time it was 36.5 years old. With 24.2 percent of the population in 2005 being comprised of children and youth younger than 18, Aiken can be described as having a medium-high proportion of youths. The 18 to 64 years old population group has a medium-high representation within the estimated 2005 area population, making up 62.1 percent of the population within the age group. People 65 and older make up 13.7 percent of the total population in the area. Compared to other counties in the US, this represents a medium-low percent of the population base.

Aiken County, South Carolina had a total estimated population of 150,181 for the year 2005. The total population has increased sharply, from the population in the year 2000 of 142,818. This growth signifies an increase of 5.2 percent. Aiken ranks 12 of 46 counties when calculating total change in population for South Carolina and the county ranks 396 of 3,141 counties when analyzing total county population change across the nation.

Aiken County, South Carolina has a population that is made up of 69.1 percent White, 25.7 percent African American, 0.8 percent Asian, and 3 percent Hispanic.
