Fairfield County, South Carolina has a population that is made up of 40.3 percent White, 57.4 percent African American, 0.4 percent Asian, and 1.5 percent Hispanic. The area population base can be described as having a very high level of diversity, with 59.3 percent of the population being minorities. This is greater than the State of South Carolina percent of 33.4. Since 2000, Fairfield has decreased the percent of minority population when 60.3 percent of the total population were minorities.

In terms of total land area, Fairfield spans a total of 687 square miles. The county has a low average population density of 35 persons per square mile.
