Income and Poverty in York County, South Carolina

The poverty rate in York County, South Carolina has increased by 2.6 percent from the rates reported in the Decennial Census, moving from 10 percent to 12.6 percent.

Black or African American headed households had median income levels that were 31.1 percent less than the total 2000 reported median, with a their median reported to be $35,914. In York County, South Carolina as reported in the 2000 Census, 23.6 percent of the White Alone, 8.8 percent of Black or African American, 29 percent of the Asian alone and 16 percent of the Hispanic or Latino population (over 25) has obtained a Bachelors Degree or Higher.

York County, South Carolina may to understood as having a highly-educated population, with 21 percent of the population (+25) having received at least a Bachelors Degree, as reported in the Decennial Census of 2000. York is reported having a higher percent of individuals with higher educations than the State of South Carolina's proportion of 20.4 percent and a lower percent than United States proportion of 24.4 percent.

From 2000 to 2005, the percent of male population that is highly educated has increased by 4.4 percent. As reported in 2005, 26.4 percent of area's male population, over the age 25, achieved a Bachelors Degree or Higher. York County, South Carolina has a population that is comprised of 75.2 percent White, 19.2 percent African American, 1.1 percent Asian, and 2.9 percent Hispanic. The area can be described as having a high level of racial and ethnic diversity, with 23.2 percent of the population made up of minorities. This is less than the State of South Carolina percent of 33.4. Since 2000, York has increased the percent of minority makeup when 22.0 percent of the people were minorities.

York County, South Carolina had a population that was estimated at 190,097 for the year 2005. The total population has increased sharply, since the population in 2000 of 165,721.
