Demographic Profile for Brazoria County, Texas

When calculating the total land area, Brazoria spans a total area of 1386 square miles. The county has a medium-high population density of 201 persons per square mile, in 2005. Similar counties, in terms of density, in the US include: -- more densely populated -- Daviess, KY (201 per sq. mile ), Northumberland, PA (201 per sq. mile ), Lee, AL (202 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- Wood, OH (201 per sq. mile ), Tazewell, IL (200 per sq. mile ), Horry, SC (200 per sq. mile ).

In 2005, the Census Bureau estimated the median age in Brazoria County, Texas to be 34.0 years old. The median in Brazoria is greater than the median age for the State of Texas of 33.2. Since the year 2000, the area has seen no change in this median, when at that time it was 34.0 years of age. With 27.5 percent of the population in the year 2005 being made up of individuals less than 18 years old, Brazoria can be described as having a relatively high percent of individuals under 18. The working age population group (18-64) has a medium-high presence of the 2005 population base, with 63.6 percent of the population within the age group. Brazoria County, Texas has a population that is made of 60.1 percent White, 9.7 percent African American, 3.7 percent Asian, and 24.9 percent Hispanic. This area can be considered to have a high level of racial and ethnic diversity, with 38.3 percent minorities. This is less than the State of Texas percent of 49.5. Since 2000, Brazoria has increased the percent of minority population when 33.4 percent of the population were minorities.

Since the year 2000, a high amount of people have migrated to Brazoria internationally. Brazoria County, Texas had an estimated population of 278,484 in 2005. The estimated population has increased sharply, since the population in 2000 of 243,271. This growth shows an increase of 14.5 percent. Brazoria ranks 14 of 254 counties when analyzing total population change in Texas and the county ranks 94 of 3,141 counties when calculating the total change in county population across the US.
