Demographic Profile for Brazos County, Texas

The U.S. Census Bureau, in the year 2005, estimated a median age in Brazos County, Texas to be 24.4 years of age. The median in Brazos is less than the median in Texas of 33.2. Since the year 2000, the area has witnessed an increase in the median age, when it was 23.6 years old. With 21.1 percent of the 2005 population being comprised of individuals under the age of 18, Brazos can be understood as having a medium-low proportion of youths. The 18 to 64 years old population group has a relatively high presence of the population, with 71.4 percent of the population makes up this age category. The retirement (65 and over) age group comprises 7.5 percent of the population. When compared to other counties in the United States, this represents a relatively low proportion of the area population base.

Brazos County, Texas had an estimated population of 156,305 in the year 2005. The population has increased, since the 2000 total population of 152,537. This growth shows an increase of 2.5 percent. Brazos ranks 52 of 254 counties when calculating total change in population for Texas and the county ranks 598 of 3,141 counties when analyzing total county population change across the nation.

Since 2000, a very high amount of people migrated to Brazos internationally. The migration from outside the US into Brazos makes up 0.9 percent of all immigration into Texas. This percent of international migration is very high when compared to international migration per 2005 population.

When calculating the total land area, Brazos spans a total of 586 square miles. This area has a medium-high density of 267 persons per square mile. Other counties with similar densities in the US include: -- more densely populated -- Outagamie, WI (267 per sq. mile ), St. Mary's, MD (267 per sq. mile ), Monroe, PA (268 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- St. Johns, FL (265 per sq. mile ), Saratoga, NY (265 per sq. mile ), Rowan, NC (264 per sq. mile ).

Brazos County, Texas has a population that is comprised of 63.9 percent White, 10.5 percent African American, 4.5 percent Asian, and 19.7 percent Hispanic. The area can be described as having a high amount of racial and ethnic diversity, with 34.7 percent minorities. This is less than the State of Texas percent of 49.5. Since 2000, Brazos has increased the percent of minority makeup when 32.7 percent of the population were minorities.
