Demographic Profile for Cherokee County, Texas

From 2000, a very high amount of people have migrated to Cherokee internationally. The migration from outside the US into Cherokee accounts for 0.2 percent of all immigration into Texas. This amount of international migration is very high when analyzed against immigration per population in 2005.

Cherokee County, Texas had a population that was estimated at 48,464 for the year 2005. The total population has increased, from the population in the year 2000 of 46,683. This growth denotes an increase of 3.8 percent. Cherokee ranks 70 of 254 counties by growth in total population in Texas and the county ranks 876 of 3,141 counties when calculating the total change in county population across the US.

Cherokee County, Texas has a population that is made up of 67.2 percent White, 14.6 percent African American, 0.4 percent Asian, and 16.8 percent Hispanic. The population mix can be considered to have a high level of diversity in terms of race and ethnicity, with 31.8 percent of the population being minorities. This is less than the State of Texas percent of 49.5. Since 2000, Cherokee has increased the percent of minority population when 29.8 percent of the total population were minorities.

By measuring total land area, Cherokee spans a total area of 1052 square miles. The land areas has a low density of 46 persons per square mile. The U.S. Census Bureau, in the year 2005, estimated a median age in Cherokee County, Texas to be 35.5 years old. The median in Cherokee is greater than the median age in Texas of 33.2. Since the year 2000, the area has witnessed a decline in the median age, at that time the median was 36.0 years of age. With 26.2 percent of the population in 2005 being comprised of children and youth younger than 18, Cherokee can be described as being made up of a medium-high proportion of youths. The 18 to 64 years old population group has a medium-low presence of the 2005 population base, with 59.5 percent of the population falling in this age category. The retirement (65 and over) group makes up 14.3 percent of the population in the area. When compared to other counties throughout the United States, this represents a medium-low percent of the population base.
