Demographic Profile for Cooke County, Texas

By measuring total land area, Cooke encompasses a total area of 874 square miles. This area has a low density of 44 persons per square mile, in 2005. Similar counties, in terms of density, in the US include: -- more densely populated -- St. Francis, AR (44 per sq. mile ), Wayne, GA (44 per sq. mile ), Hart, KY (44 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- Switzerland, IN (44 per sq. mile ), Itawamba, MS (44 per sq. mile ), Richland, IL (44 per sq. mile ).

In the year 2005, the population division of U.S. Census Bureau estimates the median age in Cooke County, Texas to be 36.2 years old. The median in Cooke is greater than the median age in the State of Texas of 33.2. Since the year 2000, the area has witnessed a decline in this median, when at that time it was 36.8 years old. With a total of 25.8 percent of the 2005 population being comprised of individuals under the age of 18, Cooke can be understood as being made up of a medium-high proportion of youths. The working age population group (18-64) has a medium-low presence of the 2005 population base, with 59.8 percent of the population falling in this age category. The retirement (65 and over) group makes up 14.3 percent of the population in the area. Since 2000, a high number of individuals have migrated to Cooke internationally. The migration from outside the US into Cooke totals 0.1 percent of all immigration into Texas. This amount of international migration is high when analyzed against the base population in the year 2005 and compared to other counties across the US.

Cooke County, Texas has a population that is made of 82 percent White, 3 percent African American, 0.6 percent Asian, and 12.6 percent Hispanic. The population mix can be considered to have a high level of racial and ethnic diversity, with 16.2 percent of the population made up of minorities. This is less than the State of Texas percent of 49.5. Since 2000, Cooke has increased the level of diversity when 13.6 percent of the population were minorities.

Cooke County, Texas had an estimated population of 38,847 in 2005. The estimated population has increased sharply, since its 2000 population of 36,469. This growth shows an increase of 6.5 percent. Cooke ranks 60 of 254 counties when calculating total change in population for Texas and the county ranks 744 of 3,141 counties when calculating the total change in county population across the US.
