Employment Report for Laredo, Texas -- Annual 2005 Industry Summary

Administrative and waste services since the year 2001 was faced with the largest loss in employment in the Laredo Metro Area. The industry lost a total of 378 jobs, or 12.8 percent of employment in the sector. These losses made up 61.9 percent of all Metro Area employment losses since 2001.

In Laredo, Transportation and Warehousing, Retail Trade, and the Health care and social assistance industries have the largest percent of jobs of all industries. The Transportation and Warehousing provides the most jobs and contributes 19 percent of all jobs throughout the region, totaling 11,832 employees. The Retail Trade and Health care and social assistance industries total 18.4 and 17.4 percent of total employment, respectively.

A top paying industry in Laredo is the mining sector with an annual pay of $51,862. From the year 2001, the industry annual average wages have grown by 13.4 percent or $6,130. The State of Texas reflects the same economic condition in the mining sector, standing at the top of sectors by 2004 industry pay.

Arts, entertainment, and recreation has seen the highest growth in employment from the years 2001-2005 in Laredo, with an industry growth of 98.6 percent. This is greater than the rate of industry employment change in the United States of 4.7 percent. The State of Texas saw a change in employment in the sector of 8.3 percent, during the period.

In Laredo, Transportation and Warehousing, Mining and Health care and social assistance industries, in terms of United States location quotient, are the most dominant in the region. The Transportation and Warehousing industry has a US LQ in the region of 5.13. In other words, the percent of total jobs in the Transportation and Warehousing industry is 5.13 times greater than the US average, showing signs that Laredo produces more than its local requirement of products and/or services of Transportation and Warehousing.

Health care and social assistance has a largest number of employees per establishment in Laredo Metro Area. The industry averages 28 employees per business. This is greater than the industry's average at the national level of 21 and greater than the Texas average establishment size of 21 for the Health care and social assistance industry.
