Demographic Profile for Amarillo, TX

Estimated since the year 2000, a high amount of people have migrated into the Amarillo metro area, with 2,864 people migrating in internationally. The migration from outside the US into Amarillo accounts for 0.4 percent of all immigration into Texas. This percent of international migration is high when comparing levels of immigration per population in 2005.

By measuring total land area, the Amarillo metro area covers a total land area of 3660 total square miles. The area has a medium-low population density of 65 persons per square mile. Other metro areas with similar densities in the US include: -- more densely populated -- Mount Vernon-Anacortes (65 per sq. mile ), Fargo (66 per sq. mile ), Madera (67 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- Jefferson City (64 per sq. mile ), Danville (64 per sq. mile ), Pueblo (63 per sq. mile ).

The Amarillo metro area had a population of 238,664 in 2005. The estimated population has increased sharply, from the population in the year 2000 of 227,083. This growth signifies an increase of 5.1 percent. Amarillo ranks 11 of 25 MSAs in terms of population growth in Texas and the metro area ranks 161 of 361 metro areas in terms of population growth in the United States.

The Amarillo metropolitan statistical area (MSA) has a population that is comprised of 68.4 percent White, 5.7 percent African American, 1.8 percent Asian, and 22.4 percent Hispanic. This area can be considered to have a high level of diversity, with 29.9 percent minorities. This is less than the State of Texas percent of 49.5. Since 2000, Amarillo has increased in diversity when 26.5 percent of the population was made up of minorities.

The U.S. Census Bureau, in the year 2005, estimated the median age in the Amarillo metro area to be 34.1 years of age. The median in Amarillo is greater than the median in Texas of 33.2. Since the year 2000, the area has seen an increase in the median, when the median age was 33.4 years of age. With a total of 15.3 percent of the population in 2005 being comprised of children and youth younger than 18, Amarillo can be described as having a medium-high proportion of youths. The 18 to 64 years old population group has a medium-low presence of the 2005 population base, with 61.6 percent of the population within the age category. People 65 years old and older make up 13.4 percent of the population. When compared to other metro areas in the United States, this represents a medium-low percent of the population base.
