Demographic Profile for Texarkana, TX-AR

The Texarkana metro area had an estimated population of 133,805 in 2005. The estimated population has increased, since the population in 2000 of 129,754. This growth signifies an increase of 3.1 percent. Texarkana ranks 20 of 25 MSAs when calculating total change in population for Texas and the metro area ranks 254 of 361 metro areas by growth in MSA population in the United States.

From 2000, a medium-low amount of people have migrated into the Texarkana metro area, with 426 people migrating in internationally. The migration from outside the US into Texarkana totals 0.1 percent of immigration into the State of Texas. This percent of international migration is medium-low when analyzed against immigration per population in 2005.

By measuring total land area, the Texarkana metro area encompasses a total area of 1512 total square miles. The area has a medium-low average population density of 89 persons per square mile, in 2005. Similar metro areas, in terms of density, in the US include: -- more densely populated -- College Station-Bryan (90 per sq. mile ), Charlottesville (90 per sq. mile ), Danville (92 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- Bellingham (87 per sq. mile ), Winchester (86 per sq. mile ), Albuquerque (86 per sq. mile ).

The Texarkana metropolitan statistical area (MSA) has a population that is made up of 69.7 percent White, 23.8 percent African American, 0.5 percent Asian, and 4.2 percent Hispanic. The population mix can be considered to have a high level of racial and ethnic diversity, with 28.5 percent of minorities in the 2005 population base. This is less than the State of Texas percent of 49.5. Since 2000, Texarkana has increased the percent of minority population when 27.3 percent of the population were minorities.

In the year 2005, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates the median age in the Texarkana metro area to be 37.2 years old. The median in Texarkana is greater than the median in Texas of 33.2. Since 2000, the area has experienced an increase in the median age, when it was 35.8 years old. With 27.3 percent of the population in 2005 being comprised of children and youth younger than 18, Texarkana can be understood as having a medium-high proportion of youths. The 18 to 64 years old population group has a medium-low presence of the population, with 61.6 percent of the population within the age group. People 65 and older make up 13.4 percent of the population. When compared to other metro areas in the United States, this represents a medium-low percent of the population.
