Higher Education in the Corpus Christi, TX Metro Area

Between 2000 and 2005, the percent of the male population that can be understood as highly educated has increased by 1.4 percent. By 2005, 20.4 percent of the total male population, in the area, has obtained at least a Bachelors Degree. From 2000 to 2005, the percent of women with a Bachelors or Higher has increased by a total of 1.0 percent. By 2005, a total of 18 percent of the female population had achieved this level of education.

The American Community Survey reported that in the Corpus Christi, TX Metro Area, many men in the area have reached the High School Diploma category, with 29.6 percent reaching this education level. The female population in the Corpus Christi metro area have achieved a lower level of higher education (Bachelors or Higher) than men; 20.4 percent (Men) versus 18 percent (Women). The most common level of education for women in the area is Some College or Associates Degree category, with 30.8 percent of the female population achieving this education level.

Demographic Profile for Corpus Christi, TX

In 2005, the Census Bureau estimated the median age in the Corpus Christi metro area to be 34.7 years of age. The median in Corpus Christi is greater than the median age in Texas of 33.2. Since 2000, the area has experienced an increase in the median age, at that time the median was 33.0 years of age. With 8.8 percent of the 2005 population being comprised of individuals under the age of 18, Corpus Christi can be understood as being made up of a medium-high percent of individuals under 18. The working age population group (18-64) has a medium-low presence of the population, with 61.6 percent of the population within the age category. People 65 years old and older make up 13.4 percent of the total population in the area. Compared to other metro areas in the US, this represents a medium-low percent of the population.

Estimated since the year 2000, a medium-high number of individuals have migrated into the Corpus Christi metro area, with 3,122 people migrating in from another country. The international migration into Corpus Christi accounts for 0.5 percent of immigration into the State of Texas. This percent of immigration can be considered medium-high when comparing levels of immigration per population in 2005.

The Corpus Christi metropolitan statistical area (MSA) has a population base that is comprised of 39.2 percent White, 3.4 percent African American, 1.2 percent Asian, and 55.1 percent Hispanic. The population mix can be considered to have a very high level of diversity in terms of race and ethnicity, with 59.7 percent of minorities in the 2005 population base. This is greater than the State of Texas percent of 49.5. Since 2000, Corpus Christi has increased in diversity when 57.9 percent of the population were minorities.

The Corpus Christi metro area had an estimated population of 413,553 in 2005. The total population has increased, since the population in 2000 of 403,247. This growth represents an increase of 2.6 percent. Corpus Christi ranks 13 of 25 MSAs by growth in total population in Texas and the metro area ranks 173 of 361 metro areas in terms of population growth in the United States.

In terms of total land area, the Corpus Christi metro area extends a total area of 1779 total square miles. The area has a medium-high population density of 232 persons per square mile. Similar metro areas in the US, in terms of density, include: -- more densely populated -- Chattanooga (236 per sq. mile ), Altoona (241 per sq. mile ), Dover (244 per sq. mile ), -- less densely populated -- Jackson (232 per sq. mile ), Savannah (231 per sq. mile ), Lewiston-Auburn (230 per sq. mile ).
