Income and Poverty in Chambers County, Texas

When put side-by-side with other counties (or parishes) throughout the United States, Chambers County, Texas may be understood as having a medium-low poverty rate amongst the population, with a poverty rate of 11.0 percent of the population with family incomes below the 1999 poverty level. The Black or African American race/ethnicity demographic group, represents the largest rate of poverty with 26 percent of the 2000 population living in poverty. People that are of the age 5 years have the most percent of people living in poverty in Chambers County, accounting 17 percent of the population in this age category living in poverty.

Hispanic headed households in Chambers County, Texas reported a median household income of $42,870, this income level is 23.6 percent less than the areas median income level for all households. Black or African American householders reported a median household income that was 41.3 percent less than the overall median reported in 2000, with a reported median of $32,930. The American Indian and Alaska Native households in Chambers County reported a median household income of $59,231, this median was 5.5 percent greater than the median level for total households in the area. It was reported in 2000 that the Asian headed households had median household incomes of $90,368. This median is 61 percent greater than the reported median household income, in the area, for all households. In Chambers County, Texas White headed households reported household income (in 2005 Dollars) of $59,370 according to the 2000 Dencennial Census, which was 5.8 percent greater than the median income in 2000.

When analyzed against other counties (and parishes) in the US, Chambers County had a relatively high median income for households of $56,118 (2005 Dollars). The income level is 16.8 percent higher than the median in State of Texas of $46,715 and the median is 12.4 percent higher than the median in the US, which is $49,133.
