Income and Poverty in La Salle County, Texas

Compared to other counties (and parishes) throughout the nation, La Salle County accounted a very low median income for households of $25,573 (2005 Dollars). The income level is 82.7 percent lower than the median income in State of Texas of $46,715 and this is 92.1 percent lower than the median for the rest of the nation, which is a reported $49,133.

When compared to other counties (or parishes) across the United States, La Salle County, Texas can be considered to have a very high rate of poverty among its population, accounting a rate of 29.8 percent with a family income under the 1999 poverty level. The Black or African American race/ethnicity demographic group, represents the largest rate of poverty with 100 percent of the people in 2000 living in poverty. The population that is aged Under 5 years have the most percent of people living in poverty in La Salle County, reporting 43.9 percent of this age cohort living in poverty.

It was reported in 2000 that the Asian headed households had median household incomes of $56,453. This income level is 120.8 percent greater than the reported median for all households in the area. The American Indian and Alaska Native headed households in La Salle County reported a median household income of $7,800, which was 69.5 percent less than the median for all households. Hispanic in La Salle County, Texas , according to the 2000 census, had a median household income of $22,190, this income level is 13.2 percent less than the reported median household income for all households in the area.
